PROTECTOR, MUFFLER 18318-MCT-010

Anyone know the cheapest place to buy this part. My is chipped scratched during my let's lay the scooter down days, and I think it is time to replace it. Seen then on line for about $95.00 to 129.00. Anyone know of any cheaper??

I don't know but if you find out please tell me, my protector is scratched too. While splitting lanes I got too close to a landscaping trailer. oops !!!

Bob...I'm looking for one also. I tried to use the stand on the scooter when I changed the oil and did not lift properly and it fell. Let me know if you find a cheaper replacement.

I have also been looking for a long time not willing to pay $100.00 plus for a plastic cover.

That is just not right.
I am close to removing the part, light sanding it, putting some spot putty from the auto parts store and spraying it with high temp black engine paint.

I am going to have this guy make me a custom muffler cover for my SW. I just need to take my cover to his shop so he can measure it. I will let you know what I find out....

That's great! Since the original piece is plastic and the one shown is apparently metal, you are opening the door to a world of possibilities. Do keep us informed.

I recommend you make a phone call to a local chroming shop. You might find it a little cheaper to chrome the existing one.

Great question.
I just put it on and haven't had a chance to test on the S'wing, but its held up on other projects I've done, but never so close to the heat as this. If it doesn't work out, it peels right off with no residue.

What is the color of carbon fiber that you used on the protector and pipe cover?? Why is your pipe cover a blue color?? What is the purpose of life?? Well, not really... anyway that fiber stuff really looks nice on there.

I see they do offer other colors, but mines just the regular gray stuff.
I think the blue tint in the above photo is just my cheap shop lights.

Hi: Mr. AllHondascoots, How is the Cover hold up? I did put a sticker that looks like Carbon fiber. But it looks like gonna come off in the near future.

Its holding up fine! No shrinkage or negative affects from the heat.
I really like the 3M brand carbon wrap. I've used several other types before and 3M looks the most realistic and goes on the easiest.

I sold the S'wing yesterday to a good riding friend, so I can still visit, and bought a TMax

A rtder who lives a few blocks over from me has a Roketa, He has a homemade muffler protector made from red oak. It seems to be holding up to the heat and is different from any I've seen.Has a light stain of some kind or maybe a wood sealent.

Craig, I am curious about your rider neighbor... can you get pics and/or details of his muffler protector? Would love to see what it looks like and hear how it is working for him.

If I can catch up with him I'll take a couple of shots(better say pictures) of it.

I'd ask John Grinsel, who apparently has owned both, but his reports can be insulting and condescending.

Finally managed to catch him at home, took pictures with phone not the best.





He's painted it since I first saw it, and knocked a couple of chips from the corners but it does it job. sorry it took so long to catch him he never seems to be home, he's got the front off trying to get headlight working. I'm glad we don't have to pull the whole front off to change or adjust the lights, he said you have to take it off then put it back on to see if its right. Talk about a pain.

Nobody asked me but here goes===if TMAX or SilverWing

#1 SilverWing cheaper to own, tires about half

#2 Honda parts/dealers are more plentyful

#3 TMAX more sporty, can be very expensive to own compared to Honda. Much better riding position, lower bars.

Givi rack much more complicated to mount. Nothing broke except mirror covers. Yamaha must put bikes together with un-adjusted air wrench, everything on super tight.

#4 at the time I owned TMAX, the adj Givi windshield was not available in the US. Wind Management not so hot on TMAX. Would try the adj windshield first off on new TMAX

Since my SilverWing is out of warranty I am looking at new bikes or left overs (discounted). I prefer to ride under warranty coverage. Saw Yellow TMAX new yesterday, pretty good price.

For the conditions in Wis, SilverWing maybe better, in TN where stuck now TMAX might better as you have to run 80-85mph indicated to keep up with flow.

TMAX harder to work on than SilverWing and driveline is complicated.

So toss up---Honda maybe better for the mini-goldwing types, TMAX more sporting...and ok TMAX prem. gas-----inspite of Yamaha's ads showing low gas mileage, Honda and Yamaha in real world about same.

Yes, yes, John, I see that you indeed have given this subject much thought. And thank you for the backhanded dig at us mini-goldwing types. We all know how much you hold the gold wing riders in contempt (because, hey let's face it they aren't you).

But, pray tell, what does your most recent screed have to do with muffler protectors (the topic in which you posted) or did you just forget and leave that particular criticism of the silverwing out?

I understand that to do anything in the maintenance line on the T-Max requires the removal of lots of plastic - not a quick task. The Mk2 is worse in that respect than the Mk1 and far worse than the Silverwing.

I used a $5 roll of duct tape to repair mine. It looks ok.

With the amount of riding you do, why didn't you purchase a Honda extended warranty?
They are unlimited mileage. It seems it would be a lot cheaper to spend around $700 to have coverage for an extra 4 years, including towing, roadside assistance, use of genuine Honda parts, zero deductible, etc than buy a whole new bike.

Just goes to show the difference in personal philosophies. I've never owned a bike in warranty. Since I do all my own work anyway, and eschew buying new vehicles due to the severe first-owner depreciation a warranty isn't a consideration for me. BTW I appreciate the 'mini Goldwingness' of my Silverwing which parks next to my GL1800 in my garage. To me Goldwingness means something super reliable, excellent overall performance and practicality. Nothing handier for urban or suburban riding than a SW an nothing better on two wheels on the highways and byways than a Goldwing.

And there aren't many functions that you can add to a goldwing that you can't add to a Silverwing.
