Changed oil and filter today but the " tappit " wrench went into hiding sooooooooooooooo I find out my 11/16 " 6 point fits better than my 12 point 24 mm metric .Everything went smoothly except getting the crankcase breather tube off, when I did it was clean'

I wonder why they bother with the oil sump screen and spring? looking at that after cleaning reminded me my 1960 VW had ONLY such a screen for a filter, it was much larger, with our standard oil filter why bother with that tiny screen?

The spring I understand, it holds the screen assembly in place, but why the screen filter in the 1st. place. Why not just the drain tappit?

Arguably an "overabundance of caution" it is intended to protect the oil pump from crap that ends up in the sump--though I have never seen one trap a thing. Nonetheless it could keep the oil flowing and prevent a massive engine failure.

Almost all pressure lubricated engines have them, we just don't get to see them and be expected to clean them.

In 60+ years have never seen a pressure lubricated engine that did not have a screen on the oil pump intake...

Hidden oil intake strainer, not hidden oil filter.
