| It's half price pizza, and dollar taco night at the local south of the border restaurant. It's also 90 degrees and a perfect blue/white sky. The nachos and the Silverwing are both calling your name. So you've put old faithful on her centerstand, and then do the same for your Silverwing. You walk in to Cheech's Chimichongas....and there's that fantastic aroma. You order your favorites, and the waitress says, " What would you like to drink with that?"....... JEEZ.....we rode the scooter.....uh.....tea?.......no, maybe a Coke?.......oh heck, two beers please!. Socially incorrect?......downright dumb?......but nothing tastes better than pizza and beer. A beer or two with a meal is o.k........isn't it? Jeff? |

| I won't ride within at least a couple hours of having a drink. I can feel one drink (not drunk or starting to misspeak or anything, but I definitely feel the alcohol in my body), so even though I'd probably still be well within legal limits, I won't risk riding. I don't know that I'd say that one with food is downright dumb, but it's not a risk I'm personally willing to take. Here's an interesting article I came across a while ago that relates to this: http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/streetsurvival/riding_drunk/index.html Oh, and I like my pizza with mushrooms, black olives, green peppers, and onions, and while I'm not a big beer-with-pizza person (or much of a beer person in general), I might have a nice shot of ice cold vodka after dinner (provided I won't be riding) |

| All of you pilots out there will likely have heard this before, but the rule of thumb there is '12 hours from bottle to throttle'. Like DennisB, I don't drink anymore, but I have never violated that rule whether flying at altitude or down the highway.

| Hi Dennis....hope you don't have an ulcer......What's up? Hi Ed....you sound like a very responsible scooter pilot......BUT......if your'e not careful with that combination of black olives, green peppers, and onions.....you might end up in the same boat as DennisB. | When I used to drink we called American beer, training beer .One of those probably wouldn't matter . Here when you have a learners license, and for the first year of your regular license. There is 0 tolerance. If you are driving a car and you blow .05 ,they will take your license for 5 hr. I am glad that I don't drink now I don't have to worry about all of that . |

| Or Birch Beer or Ginger Beer! Ginger beer's hard to come by in the US, it's mostly ginger ale here. REAL ginger beer bites you in the throat. Thankfully the Caribbean and Jamaican stores near me have homemade ginger beer. Supersugarated (pretty sure that's not a word but I'm sure you get the meaning) but oh so good. |

| Must admit I can have a couple of beers and manage to drive my car without feeling unsafe or guilty as I'd be under the Australian 0.05 limit but if I have just one beer and get on the Swing I feel uncomfortable and unsafe and I don't enjoy the ride at all - consequently I don't do it

| Home-made Ginger Beer can be very alcoholic! When we were kiddies, my auntie made some without realising how potent it was. It made us tiddly and you remember the big glass bottles with the screw-in stoppers that cider and some beer was sold in - it blew the stoppers out! A few years ago I made some and it's powerful stuff. |

I like that rule of thumb. Lost many a work mate who didn't obey that simple rule. Flying, driving or riding with alcohol in the system is deadly. Problem being the time you do and get away with it ups the confidence to do it again and again until some poor sole dies as a result. Resist the temptation. Stay alive. |

| Nothing like beer and pizza.... AHHHHH the good old days. medical conditions prevent/avert me from those days. But once in a while I do like a pizza. with everything. Beer and riding ...NOT!!!!!!!!!!! They do make a 0% alcohol beer (I am told) that should give you the taste and cover the drunkeness for safe riding. If I knew some names of the 0% beer I would give them to you. but I don't know. MaxB (now I am thinking about pizza) DRATS!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Waspie...You said..."Alcohol free beer!!! I'd rather drink urine!!!"... I was saying the same thing about alcoholic beer in the days i was trying to learn to drink the $@(t. I was drinking the rum and spending dollars getting the drunk stage. My friends were getting to the same phase for quarters. I could never swallow the beer... still kinda of makes me want to find a tree or fire hydrant just thinking about it.... One other beer story "kinda" .... In the 70s I was a big Anwar Sadat fan, I thought he was a really brave man to sit down with the President of Israel for peace talks. I thought he was really special and I wanted to be just like him when I grew up. THEN:::: I saw him on an American TV News Show giving an interview about his family and home life.... every thing was cool... until he put this little gem out there for the whole world to hear... he discussed the local practice of drinking your own, I think he used the word "piss".... WOAH my little hero man, lets not go there... I was still enjoying my Grapette sodas... needless to say, he came off my pedestal immediately. I still admired his bravery and willingness to talk peace, but, there is a difference in "Peace" and "Piss".... And for all you beer drinkers out there. I still love ya man.... please be gentle to me. You like the beer .... I LOVE the MORPHINE..... |

| I've never been a great beer-drinker either, Gary, although the occasional glass of Guinness has passed my lips; Southern Comfort was my tipple. Having said that, I've developed a liking for Belgian beer - it's more a stout along the lines of Guinness or Mackeson. |

| Mike, Southern Comfort? That is volatile stuff, it sneaks up on you and BAM, the rest of the day is a blank memory! Yes, that is the voice of experience. I just have a beer or some Jack Daniels once in a while, I gave up getting drunk a long time ago. Ride safe! Wes |

| Times are getting tougher out there. When I was training for my private in 1963 the rule of thumb recommended by the FAA examiner was "Eight hours from bottle to throttle." I guess we were tougher back then. |

| But what about the Harley riders? Every weekend throughout the mid-west, the Big Twin folks put charity in the forefront and sponsor poker runs. Every stop to pick up a new card is generally a watering hole, and a fermented cereal beverage is generally added to the rider. They are drinking....and riding......and supporting an important cause. Have we become such "Nancy Boys" that we cant risk our own, and the publics safety, to help out an important, debilitating illness,......... like athlete's foot? Jeff |

| Well....
I guess drinking and driving on a cycle is safer for the rest of us, so if you're going to drink and drive I guess I'd rather have you on a bike than in an SUV.
I'm so paranoid about getting pulled over and having my life ruined by the police that I won't have a single drink if I am driving.
Last year I was pulled over and given a field sobriety test even though I had not had anything to drink. It was fairly humiliating doing the dance for the cop as other people drove past.
I'm positive you can have one or two beers and not impair your ability to drive, but I'm also pretty certain that the cops can and will happily ruin your life if they catch you, impaired or not. |

| I've got a bad back messed up vertebra, take pain meds but won't ride if I've taken them within 4hrs of riding. One I don't want to kill myself, two don't want to kill anyone else. Probably couldn't pass half of the test if I hadn't taken any for a month before hand. Just don't want to take chances or give them a reason to stop me. Craig |
