| Deb and I start our trip in less than two weeks. Having a little stress trying to find a route from Asheville, NC to Kitty Hawk NC without getting on Interstate. Some of you that are familiar with the area, can you advise me of (A) route of non interstate or (B) is that interstate heavy truck route. I don't mind the Interstate, but the little lady squeezes me to death when we do the interstate and a truck passes us. I want to enjoy the trip not be bruised all over after the trip. Planned route visit points so far: Whitwell, TN.... Tail of the dragon...Smokies...Asheville, NC... Raleigh, NC and Kitty Hawk (Atlantic Ocean). That will complete the eastern portion of my bucket list item of going from coast to coast on the UltraWing. We will complete the Western leg next spring. Provided I live that long. I have decided not to go to Gettysburg because of time we have. I know there are thousands of places and sites to see along this route. We will see a bunch of them, but the time limit is going to hamper seeing them all. We have only 13 days including travel and site seeing. I want to spend some time off the seat to enjoy the view and not look at everything from the seat at 65 MPH. Thanks for your help in getting me across NC... you can post here or just PM me . Have a great weekend everyone. |

| Gary this is what Google suggests for a non-hwy route. I plugged in your waypoints and got this. At the bottom of the map click to view a larger map, then zoom in for route numbers and details. Its a start, you can change or add to it. Edited to change Raleigh to Kitty Hawk leg to US 64View Larger MapView Larger Map

| I would suggest a slightly different route for the Raleigh to Kitty Hawk leg than the one given by Google above. I live in Raleigh and I always take 64 to the Outer Banks. There may be some traffic as you approach and leave Raleigh (just don't do it during rush hour and it should be fine), but other than that it's a good road and with only moderate truck traffic. The route suggested by Google will take you through some fairly densely populated areas as you leave Raleigh, and I think it would be a much more stressful ride compared to 64. The ride into Raleigh on 64 is also nice. |

| I'm only going to add this because no one else did: You can go to Google maps and "get directions" and a couple boxes will pop up where you put your start and end points. Under this (and after you put in your locations) is a link to "show options." Click this and a box will pop up with 2 check boxes. Check "avoid highways." Then click "Get Directions" button.
I won't guarantee it to give you "non-truck" routes, but it will give you better routes than w/o it. You can also add points in between if you want for particular places you want to go through. |

| Thanks Smorkle, I left out how I created the map. When you click the larger map you will see the waypoints listed on the left sidebar and the "avoid Highways" box is checked. |

| I don't know if it's still there, but in WANCHESE , there is a resturant above a fish market( where all the boats unload) that served the best fish to be had. It has been more than 10 yrs since I went to the outer banks. But ifr it is still there you owe it to yourself to stop.
it was right at the end of a street on the water.
maybe someone will know its name.

| This won't help this year, but most states have a website where you can order maps and points of interest and the're free (LOVE THAT WORD). This is great for those trips you are planning in the future. Hope you and Deb have a great trip. |

| When are you planning on going? In 2 weekends I'm meeting friends in Asheville to go through Kitty Hawk on a trip through the outer banks. We should compare notes. So far we're planning on going through southern VA.
Another route that would be good if you weren't frequent to the area would be to take the blue ridge parkway from asheville to Fancy Gap VA, then take hwy 52 down the mountain to Mount Airy, then catch up with 64 east. |

| The Mt Airy area is beautiful, and it is the boyhood hometown of Andy Griffith. If you are a fan of Mayberry RFD it is worth a stop. |

| Wow Andy... that blue ridge route through fancy gap to kitty hawk is just what I was looking for. Great route, really laid back roads and looks very rural. Kinda like home. Thanks for the tip.
We leave Rison on Thursday the 12th. Expect to get to: Lawrenceburg TN first night. (400 miles), Second night will be in Sweetwater, TN via Whitwell, TN (250 miles) Third night in Arden, NC (250 miles) Fourth night in Eden, NC via Fancy Gap (265 miles) Fifth night on Outer Bank (285 miles). Haven't made up our minds if we will come back to Rison or just live on the beach. |
