| Hi all, I have a question. I recently got my Silverwing and I love it. Since I only got one key for it I was trying to get a duplicate one for safety. I checked a couple of locksmiths but they did not carry the blanks for this type of key. I know I can order this from the dealer but since I work weekdays until late I don't have a chance to get there.
Does anyone know of a source for blanks that I could order and then bring along with my original to get cut? |

| If your Silverwing has HISS then just getting a duplicate key cut won't work. You need to get the correct key from Honda (any key cutter can cut it), and then go back to the dealer to have the new key, your old key and the HISS remapped. You have to take the scooter to the dealer rather than just the keys. Honda key has the transponder in it. Ask me how I know!
Cheers,

| tmb, I'm asking, I'm asking.
I had Honda change my whole system when I had an ignition barrel problem, but that wasn't HISS related just a mechanical problem that stopped me turning the key in the ignition barrel. Fuel cap, seat and storage compartment weren't affected! |

I had to get second key. I just took my orginal key to the honda dealer, didn't have to take the scooter. |

| I think US models just have "keys", good lockshop should be able to duplicate----chipped? see Honda dealer. |

| I have a FSC manual for my FJS machine and I can find no mention of the HISS system in it so I guess it is only fitted to the European and Far East models.
For those not in the know, HISS is the Honda Ignition Security System. This stops the bike starting in the event of an incorrect key code or no coded key in the ignition barrel. You can try and hot wire the machine but again, without the matched key/barrel combo you will spend a long time getting nowhere.
So with a key blank it should simply be a case of getting the blank cut at any key shop. |

| I have just had a third key made for my HISS, there is a standard charge for programming the key to your machine. I have been told that if you lose all the keys on a HISS bike that you have to replace all the ignition system (about £1000) to get back into action with a new different set of keys !!!! |

| Thanks a lot everyone, you have been most helpful with different options I can surely manage to get a copy made. The key does not seem to have any chip on it and looks exactly like the one on the link below. Since I am not in a hurry so I will order this probably and get it cut locally. I had no idea that they even made these locks with the chip for the Silverwing, that's amazing. - LVScooterBill wrote:

| You might try calling local dealers and ask where they have keys made. I couldn;t find blanks at any of the hardware stores, but found a long time key shop that carried them. Let your fingers do the walking , or just ride to all the key shops in a fifty mile radius. Kind of like an Easter egg hunt, but you get to ride. You'll never need a spare key, unless you don't have one. :lol!: |

| Thank you very much. My experience with the local dealer is that they charge an arm and a leg and would even try to get your first born... I am kind of kidding, but I had bad experience with the local dealer in terms of prices and service. Some years ago the light bulb of my Honda Magna burned out and when I went to the dealer they wanted to charge me $120 for the parts, the guy there was insisting that I had to replace the whole assembly, would not sell me just a light bulb because he kept saying that I needed some special assembly. To this price I would have had also then to add whatever it would have costed to do the replacement job. I bought an aftermarket light bulb for $3.50 and replaced it myself. It sounds like a key from the dealer will cost some $40 or so. Any other key I did for my earlier Hondas costed less then $7 and worked fine. I just ordered the blank mentioned above and will go that route. |

| Waspie,
Key can be used in the other locks without a problem. It is just the ignition that needs the transponder.
Carlosw, Chip/transponder is inside the key and can't be seen from the outside.
Key £25 , ½ hour labour at whatever rate the dealer charges. HISS has to be done at a dealers as apparently no one else has the equipment needed.
Cheers, |

Cheers, Aware of that. We have discussed this on here before regards folk using cut off keys in glove box and luggage compartment locks. The ignition system of the HISS capable 'Wings' need specifically programmed keys! In fact keys and their various problems have been done to death over the years, lubricated or not lubricated, yup - keys have had their fair share of posts!!!!! |

| I wanted to let you all know that following the directions I got from the members I got in a new Honda key from Ebay and a Givi Key from GIVI. I then went to 3 different locksmith who did not want to cut the keys for me due to earlier failures...
Anyway, I finally went to someone who did my earlier Honda key, he copied both of them and they worked perfectly. The model I have (Silverwing 2004) does not have any chip on the ignition key.
Thanks a lot everyone, it was great to get all the links and information on this and it helped me doing it quickly with no mistakes. |
