| Aloha from Hawaii. Welcome to the best forum. Lots of good information here. I attended NMSU from 1968-1976, with absences. After finally graduating, my wife and I moved to Santa Fe and worked for the state. We still have friends in Las Cruces. We moved back to Hawaii in 1979. Ride safe! |

| Welcome Iker. I hope that I can say that I am still riding when I am 79.
My 2 wheel life began when I was 14 with a 1958 Allstate Cushman 721 Highlander. How scooter technology has changed since then.
The Cushman had no battery and the output from the generator caused headlight brightness to vary with engine speed. At idle, the brightness was close to lightning bug brilliance. With no battery, it was kick-start only.
It only had a centrifugal clutch and one fixed gear ratio. The CVT transmission didn't exist for scooters yet.
It didn't have a front brake. The rear drum brake was not particularly effective at stopping. During a panic stop, the rear brake did produce a nice skid mark to the point of impact.
A passenger had to sit on the gas tank. There were no passenger footpegs. The passenger would place his feet on the two bars on either side of the engine. The left foot was safe but the right foot was another story. The passenger would usually get his right foot too close to the massive spinning clutch and it removed chunks of his shoe. Being a passenger on that scooter was akin to sticking your foot in a wood chipper.
It was my daily driver until I graduated from high school and I loved it.
I hope that you enjoy the site. Visit often and keep us posted on how you are doing. |

. Was the "skid mark" on the pavement or in your shorts? :lol!: |

| Comment on clutch----Salsbury (sp?) scooters did have CVT in the late 40's----isn't he the guy who invented it??. They had gas pedal. too. |

Was the "skid mark" on the pavement or in your shorts? :lol!: The answer to that question was "All of the above". CVT's have been around for a long time. I looked up Salsbury on Wikipedia John. It appears that they did come up with the first CVT for a scooter in the mid 40's. It looks like it just took a while to get adopted. Have a great day everyone! |

| Hi ike,
Welcome aboard.
Was thinking about a camping trip to 'The City of Rocks' Camp grounds. Have you been camping there and what is the best time of year?
Was thinking about bringing along my telescope. I have a Meade LX90 8".
Thanks! |
