PostSubject: New member   New member I_icon_minitimeThu Oct 09, 2014 10:58 pm

First, I would like to introduce myself :

Gilbert Despeghel
Born may 24, 1962
Loppem, Belgium.

Owner of 2003 Honda Silverwing FJS600 since only 2 months now.

I,m very happy of this powerfull machine, but there is one thing that is disturbing to me.

When I drive on quite routh pavement, the front housing starts to "rattle".
Before I start to dismantle the whole cover, is there someone with experiance about this topic ?

Thanks in advance for all your advice...

Welcome from the Desert Southwest of the U.S.A.

The most common source of rattles from the front are loose bits in the storage cubbies.
Next check the "W" panel or windshield garnish. If not removed properly by a previous owner the plastic tabs near the bottom of the panel may be broken off. While the "W" panel is off check that the six expandable rubber stays or grommets that hold the windscreen are in place.

desander welcome to the best Silverwing forum on the www, you've made wize move joining. You've also chosen a good scooter.  If you have things in the two storage boxes(glove boxes) in the dash they can rattle a lot, if so try removing it and see if it helps. I'm sure someone else will chime in to offer suggestions. People here can be helpful and friendly at times.
There's a lot of good information to be found on this forum. For upgrading your SW Look Here And if you plan to do your own maintenance Look Here The search works good on this forum, and if you can't find what you're looking for just ask and someone will be happy help.

I think I will dismantle the cover anyway, for I need the be familiar with this bike.
And so, maybe I will find out from where the disturbing noise is comming from.
I saw youtube vids of front cover removals, and I also have the german digital version (pdf) of the garage workbook.

Let you know how things went...

Thanks for the advice

applause applause welcome applause applause Welcome Desander. It sounds as if you have done your research and gotten the manual to help you. The Silver Wing has a history of rattles and there is a lot of information here on what others have done. I look forward to your adding to the solutions. Enjoy the ride. small moped small moped

Hello Gilbert and welcome!

I lived for four happy years in Belgium, in Oostkamp, not far from you.
I bought my first Silverwing brand new in Ostend and it always rattled on cobbles! Laughing

Welcome aboard desander.

I might suggest going around and tightening every screw you can find. I have an 08 SWing that I got on April of this year and found at least 3 screws that were a few turns loose and a couple more that were just a bit loose.

I've also learned from this site how to change oil/filter, front and rear tires, rear drive oil (all of which I've already done) and the drive belt and rollers which I'll do this winter. I don't mind doing my own work as long as I know what I'm doing. This site, and your manual, will get you through most, if not all of it.

Again, Welcome Aboard!

I have an "older" Wing like you, a 2002. My experience, based on owning and racing vintage English and Italian sports cars is that things will shake, rattle and roll despite foam rubber weatherstripping, Locktite and proper application of a torque wrench! It is just the nature of older things. As for myself, I rarely rattle, even over bumps, but I constantly make creaking and groaning noises even WHEN motionless! Thank goodness that Swings were not built with Lucas or Magnetti Morelli electrics - such things come pre installed with ghosts and gremlins! swing

Aprilla.Yamaha & now the best ride - 04 600 Silverwing.I may feel more comfortable on the interstate. Moved from a 37' DP rv to riding in the breezes.Only three years riding so I'll ask for information.
I've ridden the Dragon - N.C section of the Blue Ridge Pkwy & the Skyline Drine in Va. The RV was "YARD ART". The scooters opened a total new view of "AGING." I hope to learn a lot from each that has experienced & solved their problems

Welcome. I picked up a left-over 2012 and the first thing I did was pull the transmission / variator cover, some plastic, etc. just to get familiar with the bike for when I really needed to replace/repair something so I think that's a good idea taking off the plastic just to check. This is a great site with lots of tips, fixes and misc stuff.

Well, I did removed all the plastic front cover today.
I filed everything with cable ties or foam, I could think of.
After a huge work of reassambling everything, unfortunately, the rambling noice is still there.
Tomorrow, I will take a small ride whitout the Givi-windshield.
For me, it can now only come from there.

I will let you know....

Hey !

I found the culprit.
It was the black plastic cover shell around the steer, that caused the noise.

Ultimatly, I'm a happy biker now....

cheers applause I applaud your finding of the problem and the posting of the results. Maybe it will help others. Too often people post a query and then disappear when the problem is corrected. This is the true beauty of this forum. Thank you for reminding us.

This evening, I would drive back home from work on my SW.
The bike stood the whole day outsite in the rain for the first time that I own him.
And yes, indeed....he refused to START !

Tomorrow, I will take the car to work.
So, my SW is still there, left alone by me.
That means that I will have to meassure everything out to find out wath cause it is.
Can anybody help me with his or here experiance on starting problemes by rainy weather ?

desander a little more information would be helpful. Is it turning over when you turn the key? Have you checked the kill switch on the handlebars? Did you put the side stand up? Are you holding the rear brake handle in hard? Give us more information.

The startmotor does not turn over.
The "kill" switch is in the proper position.
The site stand is in the proper position.
I hold the left ( rear ) brake handle in hard.

Today, I will first have to meassure if the battery has suffisiant power.
Maybe a booster will do.

Anyway, by turning the key to start, the dashboard comes to live...

Is it a fuse, the brake switch, the kill switch, the condensator or the startmotor ?
We'll have to check all these points, wright...

Well, I found the culprit.
It was the brake switch.
I removed this switch from the steer and made the switching pins
moving properly again with contact cleaner.

A few more of these teething, and I will know my bike inside and out !

Problem solved.

desander,

It sounds like you are the new expert on the Silverwing on this site now. I'm glad all is well and hope it stays that way. The SWing is a bulletproof bike so I'm sure all will be well now.
