Decided to get a 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT

Hi all,

I decided to update my ride to a 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT. My 2009 SW has 83,500 miles on the clock. I bought it in 2010 with 3700 miles on the clock.

I took the GW out for a test ride last September for a short jaunt. I also tried the Africa Twin DCT. I liked the GW better. Last Saturday I took the GW out for almost 200 miles and 4/12 hours. I truly enjoyed it. Very smooth, the weight did not bother me. It was so comfortable. Bob and I go on quite a few long trips and I wanted more wind/rain protection, ABS, the larger wheels make it smoother. I figured I better do this now before I get to old to handle the weight and size. But, I have to say it is a very nimble bike.

We traded in Bob’s 2004 BMW R1150R. more space in the garage. Also, I decided to give my brother my SW. He lives in WI just north of the IL border not far from us. He has some nice uncrowded country roads up there. He and his wife got there MC licenses 15 years ago but never could really get bikes to ride. Life got in the way. They are very excited.

I love the SilverWing, it is a great bike. I have really enjoyed the last nine years riding almost 80,000 miles in 41 states. This forum has given Bob and I some great advice on the Swing. The info on this forum is priceless. I have met a few of the members on this site over the years, wonderful folks. To name a few Tim/Cosmic Jumper, sonuvabug, Opalsboy, DennisB, Hi-Yo, Smorkle I am probably forgetting a few others.

A new adventure begins. I will be popping in every now and again to see how you are all doing. Thanks to Jeff and all the administrators who kept this forum going. It is the best SilverWing site out there.

Cathy, I just watched a review video on this bike. No wonder you are so happy and excited.

Does yours have the airbag feature? Hope you never need it but also hope it works well if you do.

Cathy, enjoy your new ride. I thought long and hard about a new DCT GW but ultimately, my wife won't ride with me so the Silver Wing works for me.  I bought a side by side instead, and that she will ride in

Aw Jeez, Kathy. Sad to hear that you're "leaving the fold". But congratulations and best o'luck with your new GW. Your high touring miles have been an inspiration to many here.

WT... Mr. Bob traded-in his R1150 so you could step up to a GW? That's damn noble. So what's he going to ride now? Do you think the BMW Owners Group meets will let you in without casting a jaundice eye?

BTW, The first farkle you should consider is a headlight protector. IIRC that LED headlight is $2500-$3000.

Bob will ride it I am sure. But he already was planning how to get my SW up to my brother’s with him on the GW. The thought of him riding the SW up there. Lol. My brother can pick it up. I have a number of items to give him I don’t need anymore. Mine does not have the air bag. $$$$$

The center of gravity is low and so is the seat. It is lower than the SW and I can flat foot it. Having walking mode and reverse also helps a lot. I am sure we will be riding 2 up at times. I will try to post a picture but I have forgotten how. I have one posted on Maxi-scoots. It is simple to post photos there.

I will still be around. Bob still has his 2014 BMW R1200GS and a 1987 Honda Magda 700 that doesn’t run. Need garage space. Also, my SW is still in the family I will be able to visit and ride with my brother. As for the BMW Rally’s they welcome everybody. Always had questions with my SW. I stood out.

I can already see more states filled in on that map. Alaska and Hawaii look out!

The JUly '19 edition of Rider magazine had an article on a guy who rode the passes of Colorado on a GW DCT with no problems.

Did the wind and rain protection have anything to do with your decision?

Lewis, I haven’t been in the wind and rain yet on the GW but this last trip in June I spent 180 miles in a torrential down pour from Tellico Plaines, TN to Bristol, VA when I said enough and took a hotel.

Bob concurred. I should have Mississippi,Louisiana and Delaware colored in but I can’t get that to work either. I only have the six Southwestern states and Florida to get to on the lower 48 on two wheels.

OMG, it worked. Much easier than in the past to post.

I've owned all models of the Goldwing from the GL1000 to the GL1800. None as new as you have but any Goldwing is the best highway bike ever built. I put about 350,000 miles on my 'Wings including two trips back to Juneau, AK to visit friends, and one trip from the West Coast to the East Cost for a rally. The DCT would have been enjoyable but my last one was a 2008, poor me I had to shift once in a while. With that big high torque flat six you didn't have to shift near as often as most bikes. Enjoy and ride safe!

Well my brother came today to pick up my Swing.  I put just about 80,000 miles on it. It served me well.  I’m enjoying my Goldwing. Only have just over 200 miles on it.  Life has been busy.  I have added on a headlight shield, seat tie downs, kickstand foot enlarger,  Ciro Big Ass drink holder and saddlebag, trunk carpet pads.  I also bought an Ultragard half touring cover.  Smaller SW MOTECH dry-bag seat bag.  So far all of my camping gear, jacket etc. is fitting in my saddlebags and trunk.

That’s all for now.  Hoping to go camping next weekend in WI. Here is a pix of my brother taking his new ride home to WI.
