front fork removal - Front Wheel Bearings Empty
PostSubject: Front Wheel Bearings   front fork removal - Front Wheel Bearings I_icon_minitimeSat Aug 31, 2024 10:10 am

I pulled the front wheel with the intention of replacing the bearings. The seals popped right out but for the life of me I could not get the bearings out. The were hard against the internal spacer and there was no place to get purchase for the drift. I looked around the internet but only found stuff I was familiar with.
This is what I came up with. I went to Home Depot and bought a 3/4 "  expanding bolt. Went home and put it in the bearing. (It was snug so a whack with the hammer was needed)  Put a piece of pipe out of my junk pile on it. Tightened it up, flipped the wheel over and used a large punch to drive it out. Worked like a charm. Here is a couple of pics.

Very well done. How many miles on your SWing that it needed new wheel bearings?

Nice job. Glad it worked out.

When I first decided to check my front wheel bearings, I took off the wheel and the left-side bearing fell out all on its own. The previous owner had obviously ignored a seized bearing and it had enlarged the bearing face inside the wheel. It cost me a new wheel !

Thanks for the pics. very helpful for future reference.

I'm coming up on 20,000. The last time I was at highway speeds (70mph) I heard some noise out of the front end. When I pulled the wheel one side had a little catch to it. New bearings were the fix.

Well done david!, and a good guide for the rest of us.
