Scratches on the plastic exhaust cover

For those that have a few scratches on the plastic exhaust cover, I have an easy fix.
A few months ago after learning how expensive the part was, I decided to work on it my self.
I bought a small tube of red spot filler from the auto parts store, some sand paper(something around 700 grit) a can of Krylon fusion spray paint made for plastic and a bottle of mineral spirits.
All you have to do is remove the two screws that hold the cover to the exhaust, sand down the rough edges of the scratches and give a light sanding to the rest of the cover. Fill in the scratches with the spot putty, re-sand until you feel absolutely nothing. It is called feathering. You want to see the surrounding areas of the spot putty blend into the outside of the scratch. (very important) Clean with the mineral spirits, dry and paint.
The total time spent was about half an hr. and months later still looks perfect. It my not be chrome color but that was not an option.

That chromed plastic shows scratches worse than anything else I think. Probably much better off with paint, but will the heat give it problems?

Good solution. The heat should not be a problem as long as you use a high tempurature formulated paint.

The previous owner of my SWing dropped the bike, more than once.

I was looking at buying the Leo Vince carbon heat shield, but the lowest price I could find was $55.

Your sand and paint option sounds like a good alternative. Still, after the cost of supplies and the time involved, I'll probably go with the Leo Vince if I can find it on sale.

I can't see that there would be any heat transferred to the plastic shield. If there were, surely there would be some deforming of the shield.

Have a look in allhondascoots' photo's - he's done a carbon wrap on the shield, looks awesome. I fancy trying that on my Wing!

I can't find the topic regarding that particular mod, but I'm pretty sure he did post something about it, and colour-coding his drive cover.

I'd really like to learn how that "wrapping" stuff works. Well, I'd like to have the time to learn it, I mean.
