First topic message reminder :

Hi,

I replaced my XL Clearview with a Givi windshield and I produced this "Pictorial" for others who would like to do this. It is really a very simple process that only requires a phillips type screwdriver. If you follow the below document you should have no problem whatsoever. If you have any problems or questions please get back with me. There really is no reason to pay a mechanic to do this work since it is really quite simple and only takes about 30 minutes your first time.

Here is the .pdf format:

It was the Givi standard

I haven't had it out on the road yet since i just installed it late today

But it should be a big improvement over the stock screen once I hit highway speeds

I didn't see any point in installing the two small metal braces since
Honda did not think it necessary to require them on the OEM shield

Hey Swingers,
I installed my Givi adjustable a week ago. I live on a large island in the North Atlantic. We may experience a week of calm weather in a year. Usually it is windy and much of the time it is gusty and varies in direction as hills, trees, valleys, bays and coves all influence direction and most roads follow the coastline. Gusts of 60 to 70kmph (36-42mph) are common here and I have ridden in them with the OEM screen and it was not fun. My background is in design and construction. Looking at the OEM 6 screw mounts versus the Givi with extra flange brackets and extra drilled screw into an existing although hidden threaded nut mount, it just made prudent sense to take the extra step, time and careful drilling to align with nut mount. I also removed the front meter visor to satisfy myself my drill would meet up and not damage mount and it eases the mind considerably seeing what your drilling Wink

Looking at the added structural support of the flange and drilled connector and remembering the OEM screen's excessive top flapping at speed I strongly advise all with Givi adjustable to install install this additional hardware.

I'm happy with my Givi adjustable because it is adjustable and my riding conditions vary. It is quieter too as I finally heard the Swing at speed and the excessive vibrations are gone.....although the Beach Boys liked them.
Easy.

Installed the brackets today after riding around all week without them
The Givi is a big improvement over stock.
Makes you wonder Honda doesn't off an optional taller screen .
After all, there's a lot of us out there who aren't vertically impaired.
I can see the value of the brackets since they help spread the stress load.

I also forgot to mention that I used an old CD (compact disc) to help
work the windshield garnish loose. It makes an excellent tool for that purpose.

No, I never owned a CD by the Bee Gees, though using it as a tool is probably the best use of any CD by them.
It was an old computer CD from one of my wife's classes .
I though I might as well put it to some useful purpose.

If I owned a Bee Gees CD it would be top of my list of CD's to use as a coaster for my coffee mug or a suitable item to prise off my front garnish. Laughing

You may want to hold on to those Bee Gees disks...

Bee Gees' singer Robin Gibb has died aged 62 after a lengthy battle with cancer

I swapped out the stocker today for the Givi Airflow. It took less than 30 minutes with this very helpful walk through. The air is much cleaner and quieter on all settings. I think I'll stick with the middle setting as to keep the top of the screen out of my eyeline.
Thank you so much for posting the pictorial. I'm sure I could've figured it out, but there was zero guesswork involved thanks to you. I opted to NOT use the aluminum brackets due to my lack of drilling confidence. Thanks again.

Steve

Im awaiting delivery of my airflow screen, hopefully any day now, I'll fit the metal brackets as I think they are there for a reason, and givi are the experts, honda dont use them on the stock screen, but the givi is bigger causing maybe a bit more stress on the brackets, also honda threaded the top framework for a reason. it will just give me piece of mind on windy days riding on the motorway.

Can someone post a good clear picture of where the brackets go on the Givi windscreens? I have the brackets and have not put them on yet but may do it. I have probably put close to 20,000 miles on without them.

Have a look at the first post in this thread:

https://www.silverwing600.com/t46-givi-windshield-installation-pictorial

Download the pdf link.

Then look at the pictures of the six grommets, three each side, which are marked 'Don't push hard on them'.

Just below them are two set-screws.
Remove them with an Allen-key and offer up and bolt on the brackets with the bent bit forwards - bolts marked '5' in the diagram marco's posted below.

It is obvious, even to me, how they fit.

Then check my last post in the linked thread about drilling the hole in the plastic using the front hole in the bracket as a guide.

Although Givi's own instruction sheet is pretty naff, it does show all this.

I promise you it's straight-forward - I did mine with written help (lots of it) from members, but no pictures.

Thanks, Mark.
I think I've made a mistake in my last post regarding the bolts. I will correct it -done.

I'd be very happy if someone checks my instructions.

As I said, it really is obvious how it all fits once the plastic's off.

I installed the brackets as I could think of no good reason not to AND I usually defer to the manufacturer recommendations. True that Honda did not have them on the OEM shield - but all can attest to the great amount of 'flex' in the OEM shield. I am convinced that the 'mouse ears' on the GIVI give the lower part great stability partly due to the reverse curve that they add - but this curve AND the increased area likely adds more force on the shield. There are probably more nuts, bolts, and screws on the SWing than are truly necessary - but I ask you if you leave some of them off when you reassemble your SWing to save a bit of time?

Indeed they will!
It's the anxiety over where and how to fit the brackets that puts some people off using them.

It already has, and if you factor in the price of the Madstad screen plus postage to the UK, and then being shafted again for Import Duty, and V.A.T. for a screen which may or may not suit your needs, then you're better off buying the Givi Airflow.

I've just had another look at the pictures; it's good you didn't tidy up before you took them as there's a bit of plastic swarf below the 'new' bolt for which one has to drill the hole - the captive nut is just under the plastic. Smile

Installing the Airflow was quite simple - I fitted the brackets since I figured they'd spread any load better across the 3 rubber grommets. With the brackets on, the screen seemed rock solid so I didn't bother to drill/screw the top holes however and, after 4 weeks use, haven't noticed any problems.

The bike's now done a whole 170 miles.... Smile

LOL - I didn't think you did, Mark, but it was fortuitous as it points clearly to the bolt for which the plastic has to be drilled. Smile

I have had Givi screens on my past two SW's. It has always bothered me to have my line of sight at or slightly below the edge of the screen. For this reason I am thinking of going to the medium clearview screen this time. Does anyone have any input comparing the two brands/screens? Thanks Dan

Did you have the Airflow screens? I have mine set so I can see over it but could slide the top section up to see through it - it has considerable adjustment.

I had the regular ones. Have you ever had one of those to compare? When you raise the shield is it similar to the regular one? It seems like there might be more distortion especially when you look through two shields...

You don't actually look through 'two' screens. The lower section, fixed, is quite low and doesn't impede your visuals at all. The upper section has no noticeable aberrations as far as I can see!

This is not an issue at all with the Givi Airflow. You can adjust it easily to see over the top. At lowest adjustment is is much lower than the stock screen. Hard to compare the Airflow to Clearview - apples and oranges due to the Airflow's adjustability - just move it where you want it.

Well, the instructions on here were brilliant, but I still managed to f it up. Somehow the screws for the new bracket won't meet the intended target, so I left the brackets on without the extra bolts and if need be I will get a nut and bolt and so something like that.

Can't wait to try it out tomorrow. Thanks for the pictorial.

Yeah, I'm the modern day James Dean. I just hope I don't run into that tree that James Dean ran into. There's a saying we had in the Marines...A Real Man goes bracketless on their SWing. disbelief

Recently purchased a 2005 SW with a Givi windshield in place and the stock one thrown in. Since I prefer not looking through a windshield while riding, I wanted to switch to the stock unit ASAP. It looked complicated, but after reviewing the pictorial I jumped right in. Took 20 minutes start to finish. Just want to say thanks to the pictorial author and the Forum. I expect to spend much time learning from other members. GREAT resource! Allen

Great pictorial and thanks for the warning about the little rubber things. The front panel was a bit fiddly to ease off but eventually came away without any damage to the lugs. I fitted a Givi 214D screen to a 2010 Silver Wing and it did not require any brackets or drilling.

work the windshield garnish loose.

What is this garnish of which you speak? Is it relevant when fitting an Airflow?

Over here, "garnish" usually means a pathetic example of a salad served with a steak - half a tomato and a wilted lettuce leaf! Sometimes, if the "chef" is feeling creative, you may get some grated carrot!

It's the plastic trim piece that covers the Windshield fasteners .
Over here it means any kind of decorative trim

The 'garnish' is that large W shaped plastic cover on the front of the scooter than covers the bolts that hold the screen in place. It's held in place by 4 screws, 2 in the centre above the headlight, and 1 either side of the screen. Unscrew them and remove the garnish by pulling down, being careful not to break the clips on the inside of the garnish.
