| Subject: Sudden loss of power at WOT Tue May 15, 2012 11:41 am | |
| I was riding my Swing the other day and I noticed a ping sound from the engine... I was riding it pretty hard and I am sure it was hot, I have heard some ping before after a long ride, but the temp. was in the middle in the gauge. Then I hit it WOT down a stretch and it suddenly had a total loss of power, I backed off the throttle and power returned, so I was easy on it the rest of the day and had no more problems riding it easy but could still hear some pinging from moderate to light acceleration ... now this has happened once before and I was puzzled (loss of power).... I have added some seafoam, new plugs, changed gas.... I don't like it when it happens and would like some input as to what the silverwing community thinks this could be... My Swing is a 2002 model so I know it does not have a knock sensor, what can be done to tune this bike up so it won't knock and loose power when hot? Has anyone had this power loss problem? it's like the ignition shut off in safe mode or something, do silverwings have a limp home feature that would cause this? .... Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

| Looks like gas pump issue. Can't figure the ping sound though.Maybe preignition of the lean mixture |

| You may be bouncing off your rev limiter.
I could be wrong however. |

| thank you all for your input! I think I may have found out the source of my problem... while out for a ride yesterday I experienced the problem again, it happens at 40-45mph when the belt shifts to a higher position in the CVT variator, after several stop and goes the problem returned each time around 40mph, Now a Squeal noise can be heard from inside the cover in the variator area on take off, the ping I am hearing is I believe from the engine's torque being high at take off and the clutching in the CVT is bogging down...making the engine work harder and run hotter enhancing the ping... time to take the cover off and see whats happening, I put Dr. Pully sides in it last fall 24G and it had greatly improved my take off, alot more pull ... RPM's are at 4200 at 55mpg and have not change since installed new but the take off has felt different ... I think the RPM's are lower now at take off... I'm guessing my belt is either fried or the Dr. pully weights failed... Time will tell and I'll post my findings, and Bigbird, it has 21,000 mi. on it, I too was thinking about valve issues, think I'll do a compression test too for good measure. now i have no bike to ride and the weather in Wisconsin is getting nice!... I have a goldwing 1200 too but I tore that all down last week to do a water pump & head gaskets & starter repair.... ahhh yes... let the season begin! |
