Expensive, probably cheaper to have your legs shortened!
Have you removed the buttrest? Legs wouldn't be exposed to the elements.
Just off to give Waspie his 'anti-sarcasm' pill.

| If you take a look at my album, you will see I do have highway pegs. https://www.silverwing600.com/gallery/Personal-album-of-dspevack/Collage-6-footpegs-pic_827.htmHowever these are adapted by cutting into the plastic and clamping them to the frame. The clamps are kuryakyn, and then you need the arms and finally the pegs. I have since switched my pegs for running boards. I will be happy to sell you my switchblade pegs, which also have heel rests, and the arms for them for $150 including shipping. You will have to purchase the clamps and get them mounted yourself. | This link shows the clamps that you need for any peg or cruiseboard: http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/304/Ergo-To-Ergo-II-Update
This page shows some of the many pegs and cruiseboards that can be used with the mounting system.
http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/3748/Ergo-II-Cruise-Mounts-for-GL1800
The peg system from the vespa site looks a little crude to me, and I would guess that they are being screwed in to something stronger than we have on the wing at that location, given that I see foot pedals in some of those pics.
However, that system is probably going to be cheaper than the kuryakyn method, and a lot less work. Also with the kuryakyn system, you will need more than just a mechanic. You will need someone who is used to doing custom work, and you will pay for it. Regular mechanics look at how efficiently they can do a job so they can charge you what the book says they should charge while doing the work faster than the alloted time. Custom work takes what it takes timewise, and you will only be charged for the time spent but the hourly rate is usually higher.

| If you bother to follow the link Larry posted you will see that the footpegs in the pictures are not generally available but made to order through a member of ModernVespa and are specifically for the Piaggio MP3.
He made two batches when he had guaranteed orders for the number he specified to the membership. |

| One possible problem with the footpegs Tinman has posted is that the brackets would be screwed / bolted to plastic. The weight of a foot pressed hard on the peg may cause the bracket to be levered and break unless the mounting position can be reinforced. Just a thought and someone with practical experience will no doubt be able to confirm or dismiss this thinking.

Cheers, Good point on the backing of that bracket. Since I have not had the plastic off that area of the bike, I am not sure about the location of a frame part there....but I would aim for that and perhaps put a cross brace in to accommodate the bolt. |

That is exactly what I was referring to in this post: - dspevack wrote:

In fact DennisB's attempt to add footpegs hinged on attaching to the frame inside beneath the bike and then running metal over the plastic where the feet go and out to pegs, thereby spreading all the stress over the plastic area. He abandoned that idea for the same reason. It does not provide enough strength. You will also see in my album a picture of another set of installed foot pegs done by a gentleman from Tennessee named Joe Wolfe. He welded extensions from the frame of the bike and made holes in the plastic for them to come out thru. The difference between his and my installations, is that his is welded but not adjustable in any way while mine has a clamp and commercial mounting system which allows me to use short or long kuryakyn arms, rotate those arms to the best position for me, and choose from a variety of highway pegs and cruiseboards. I can state categorically that these are the only two methods that will work because they are the only two which attach to the actual frame of the bike. I've been customizing Silverwings for a long time. I've seen virtually every mod out there and even invented a few, so I might actually know what I am talking about. |

Something to think about. |

| I created "highway pegs" that put the bulk of the incurred stress on the frame of the swing. pics are in my album. I used 1/2 inch round stock and a few parts from the hardware store. The hardest part was bending the rod. I used a plumbers torch to heat the rod. Everything else was drilling except for welding the lower pegs. I'm happy to provide additional info. |

| After a 1000 miles or so on the pegs, all I will do is sand, prime, and paint them. I would not do anything differently. Amazing what a difference a few inches makes especially when lifting my feet from a stop. The visible portion of the pegs can be removed in about 5 minutes. |

Thats great as they aren't the most attractive, so you can remove them and then install them for any long rides planned. Not bashing your project, just that is how I would use those on my bike. If you sell yours, take that off and send it to me.... I will pay the shipping and give your original investment back. |

| Total hours on the project were 6, plus a few trips to ACE Hardware. Most of the time was spent fitting the pegs and plastic after each bend, or adjustment, to make sure that they would clear the plastic, and provide the correct length for me.
I agree that they are not attractive at all, and that's part of the reason I made them detachable, but they are so very comfortable, I've not painted them yet.
If I ever sell them, they will be available on this site.

| Just out of interest, I always ride FF with my legs in the feet forward position and not with my feet down flat on the floor mats like I see some scooter riders doing. Apart from the occasional stretching of one leg at a time from behind the wind deflectors, it's very comfortable and I'm 5'11".
So is it feet down, feet forward, or just the taller riders wanting to stretch out more that highway pegs appeal to?

| I'm only 5'6 and I find the ability to stretch out, and change position valuable. I rather like that my Silverwing is a rolling couch, as much as a GW, and I like to lean back into my corbin backrest and put my feet up and relax while I ride.

| I have some arthritis and lower back stuff, so being able to move my feet around, even on a short trip is a welcome treat.
I wear Bohn Armor pants under kevlar slider jeans, Steel toe boots, Bohn Armor upper body protection under a heavy leather jacket.
Even with removing the stock butt pad and installing a custom back rest, I need the extra leg room.
One other thing I did discover, (thanks John Grinsel), having the highway pegs allows me to sit in a more aggressive riding position for the curvy parts of the road, adding to my riding fun. |

They would be great around town, but on the highway I think the wind blast on the lower legs would be intolerable after awhile. I fitted wind deflectors to get out of the wind, certainly don't need to fit pegs. (There again I'm only 5.7" so I'm not cramped in the foot forward position (the 'oo' isn't a typo for 'ee' btw!)) I agree with the wind on the legs being a nuisance, but on the Goldwing, it is refreshing to stretch the legs out for 5 or 10 minutes on a long stretch of highway. It helps with the circulation to the legs. |

| I also find that having the pegs keeps my catheter tube from getting kinked.
Just between us guys on the forum... My wife likes the pegs because with my body in an overall straighter position, the Viagra seems to kick in faster since blood flow is not impeded.
So in a way, the pegs have saved my marriage, and saved me from embarrassing wetness. |

Perhaps my thinking would clear up and I could find a way to save the world too. |

So is it feet down, feet forward, or just the taller riders wanting to stretch out more that highway pegs appeal to?
Feet down is the 'Full Toilet' position. Feet Forward / Enjoy the Ride |
