Hein Gericke made a range of luggage rolls very similar to those in the 1980’s, but without the lumbar support. I used one for years for camping gear until I discovered Ortlieb bags and pensioned it off.

I have a medium Motofizz camping seat bag. It is not waterproof and it comes with a rain cover. I line it with a heavy duty garbage bag. It has served me well the last three seasons. Has pockets on the side and on top. I got it at Aerostich. It gives me some back support when I am riding. Next bag I buy I think I will go with a waterproof roll bag like the Ortlieb or similar. Just peace of mine knowing your stuff stays dry.

I've been using a Givi roll bag with a PacSafe and it works well altho' the PacSafe can scratch the paintwork. In the UK a company called Lomo make waterproof roll bags for a really good price :- www.ewetsuits.com

Thank you all for your information. The reason I like the look of the Bikers Friend bags is because they are rigid and double as a backrest even when empty. I have several good soft holdalls but none offer the support when empty.

Mike, I can see your interest in this bag. I know you had a Utopia back rest on your other Swing. I would love to see this bag at a bike show or rally to see the size and support it gives you. It is a bit expensive. Let us know if you purchase this bag and what you think.

I will indeed Cathy; I like the Utopia very much - well-made piece of kit - but it did have its drawbacks so I wouldn't buy another myself. I shall 'um' and 'ah' for a little longer than make a decision.
