| Subject: front forks leaking? Thu May 08, 2014 5:46 am | |
| About a month ago I replaced the fork and dust seals in the front fork.As well as preloading the springs 10 mm and 20 w oil.Now they have started to leave a very fine film of oil.My question is I did not replace the bottom and top sliders as I could not get these in time. They were no longer copper coloured but a worn black colour. Im sure they are original at 33000 miles.would worn top bush let oil seep past to the oil seal so it has more to deal with ie failure or are they just there as guides and are not oil tight.oil and dust seals oem and fork crome good.oil level in forks correct. Be grateful if anyone could she any light on this.thanks all |

| My guess is you may have been sold old stock, or you have the seals in upside down. |

| Question. Did you check the fork tubes for nicks or scratches? If they had nicks/scratches they will cut up the new seals. I learned this the hard way on an old Gold Wing years back. These can be polished out with a dremel-type tool with a rubber polishing wheel. |

| The tubes have indents in them but no worse than I have had on my hornet which dont leak the dremmel is a good idea ive got one of them. |

| The dings & dents in the fork tube would certainly contribute to leaks. Nicks and scratches will tear up the seal and cause leaks.
The way to remove those nicks is to use progressively finer sand cloth and polish the scratches perpendicular to the tube. If you polish the defects in line with the fork tubes it will only create passages for the fork oil to pass the seal. HTH
