No problem you're welcome.  I often think about doing this with a lot of posts, so this time I broke down and did it. I see posts all the time that should have the title changed and moved to the  Maintenance, Tips and Hints section so a search could find them.

Since when does SilverWing have programable key? I have latest you can buy in US-2013----with plain key...that can be easy and cheap to replace----fancy key I would not have purchased bike.

My book stuff gets too fancy/complicated, I will save my money.

You should read more on this forum. There are many members in Europe and Asia. All their bikes come with HISS.

Does anyone know the reason why Honda did not include the HISS on US bound bikes?

John I posted this so we would not have to read posts from people needing to program new HISS keys. The subject comes up to often, this way all the information they need is right here and could be found with a search.  Cool

Ps
Perhaps it helps Honda keep the price down where government doesn't require it.  Neutral

These keys are waste of money in my opinion---Recently lived in Europe, my new Fiat came with one of these keys=pain in butt. I know anti steal...but who would Steal Fiat??

Bought new Honda Beat in Japan a few years ago and I think it still had regular key=great!!

How do you mean 'Recently lived in Europe'? You've been living in Tennessee since I joined the forum in late 2010 and were probably there when you joined the forum in August 2009. So a minimum of 4 or 5 years ago is hardly recent.   Smile

The latest Fiat models like the 500 and the new style Panda are excellent cars, the Panda 4x4 can out perform far bigger rivals on winter roads. The build quality and reliability has improved vastly in the last ten years or so and Fiat regularly win European motoring awards. So I'd say Fiat are desirable cars to drive, and to steal.

I think I left Europe 2009---went to Korea next. Recent in my mind. My Fiat made in Poland, used 2 years, ok but again who would steal a Fiat----what we have in US now are made in Mexico and over priced. Been in TN 3 years and do not like it---expensive/hot/horrible food/people drive like idiots.

Admin hat on.

John. Once again you have expressed a rather blunt and, in this case, an ill informed view. As a result you have rubbed people the wrong way.

Just because your opinion is at variance with others does NOT, by default, mean that you are right and they wrong! The original post was designed to assist readers. Your posts do not advance the cause. You have been warned privately about this. Now take this as a public warning.

BE NICE!

Meldrew, It wasn't you.  The topic of the thread is:

HISS
How to program
Where to get the chip
Where to get blank keys.

This system is not an optional system. It either comes on your country's bikes or it doesn't.
If it does, the information presented is valuable.
By definition the keys are not a waste of money if you need to replace them to use the bike.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, He did nothing to further the topic or even stay on topic.
He diverted the topic to the value of the system, and then gave his authoritative proclamation
on a system it appears from his post he didn't even know existed until this topic.

Opinions are only useful when their are choices to be made, or you are trolling for controversy.

Gee--I got admin on my butt----but I actually lived where these keys are the norm and and stand by my claim of waste of money. When lease on Genius my wife drives runs out in 10 months---need another car-----want crank down windows/blade key/spare tire---all things that are going by wayside in US market. Why add extra complications? and expense? Guess riders are getting to be not welcome.

You just don't get it, John.

Nobody asked for your opinion on the usefulness of the HISS system. You went way off topic.

If you want to stay in the mod's good books, you'd start a thread with the title "Your opinion of the usefulness of HISS or transponder keys".

I and likely every forum member has an opinion about transponder keys as well. But nobody asked or cares about that in this thread.

The mods are asking you to stay on topic, not ramble on with controversial statements.

With Admin hat off, let me explain where I'm coming from with an example (it will mean going off topic a little).

I have a question about maintenance/servicing. But to ask it will show my ignorance of things mechanical and that I haven't ridden the Silverwing much in the past 12 months.

My dilemma .... Do I post the question and invite replies which may be of use to others, or do I refrain, suspecting that I and my post will be ridiculed, or that I will be accused of "not being a real rider"?

My solution will probably be to ask my question in a couple of PMs to those who happily give advice; a course which will deny others information that they may find useful.

Are we here to help, or alienate?

John,I think HISS keys are a great idea, living in the UK as I do,if there is a vehicle security system in place it makes a large difference in insurance premium over a vehicle without one.

When I collected my S'Wing the previous owner told me to keep the spare key at least 2" away from the ignition switch if the engine was running as it would cancel out the main key & turn the engine off.

Only two keys are allowed to function with the HISS.  I thought I was being very clever when I had third key programmed by the dealer but I changed my mind when one of the originals dropped out !

BB,
I hear what you are saying, but threads are always getting HI-Jacked. Although not intentional. The topic probably excites John about his feelings about the HISS and other features. I wished that Honda had included it in US bound bikes. John's comments were taken, by me as his personal comments. I disagree with him, but we are all entitled to our own opinion. We here on this forum like to share. No harm, no hurt. As long as we do not give bad advise on safety issues. I feel that everyone is a little guilty of hijacking a topic. My comments here falls in that category. John adds excitement here!! LOL... You all ride safe.

Admin response:

My comments above refer, not to the (inevitable) hijacking of a thread, but to presenting (in this case) ill informed opinion as fact.

As a result, it caused friction and undermined the intention of the original poster, ie to be of help to others.

Apart from thanks and another link, nothing that followed added value to the original post. Quite the opposite and not for the first time.

I'm all for robust discussion, and informed instruction/opinion, but arrogance has no place.

I have just returned from a week long trip to a place with no internet or 3G phone (bliss). I return to find the same scab being picked.

John, nobody is picking on you, but you continue to set yourself apart; for the wrong reasons! Despite many requests not to, you continue present you thoughts as FACT in a frequently incoherent and badly presented form. You also persist in reminding us that you have ridden more miles than the rest of us put together, as though distance, by default, makes you a better rider.

It doesn't!
