Air filter mod

A lot of people are using the K&N filter (very expensive) or the OEM filter
(expensive).
I have a viable alternative to both of these.
I have used this on my reflexs (2) and VTX and goldwings in the past. I started
using this on my dirt bikes in the '70's.

When you are ready to change your filter, get a sheet of UNI air filter foam.
Get the "Green foam", it is a closer "weave" for better particle trapping. The
UNI part # is BF-1.

1. Remove old filter from scooter
2. Take sharp knife or box cutter remove all the old filter material.
3. Turn plastic filter over and trace the metal screen onto the UNI filter
material.
4. Cut out UNI filter material and oil it.
5. Place it in where the paper filter was.
6. Some glue it in ( I don't), but it should be a very snug fit.

My carbs etc, have never shown any dirt in the throats when using these.
You can get this material at local M/C shops or online.

Both K&N and Uni filters are an oil type filter. It helps trap dirt in the filter. There is a special oil for them. You spray on a little bit and spread it around. DO NOT over oil them.

When you clean them you reoil them.

I did this exact thing with the Majesty I had since they didn't make the K&N at the time. I think it did get more air in and also helped with costs so I didn't have to buy filters anymore. I'm not sure why I didn't try that with the SWing other than the fact the K&N makes them for the SWing. But I would rather have this mod then the original filter.

You can get this oil in a spray can where you just give a slight coat of oil on the filter what will catch any particles. Just go to a cycle shop and get it there and give a light coat of oil on the filter. You need to do this with the K&N and the UNI foam.

OEM Air Filter removal was kinda of cumbersome. The paper filter was really glued in there and had to use a dremel tool to remove most of the filter. This produced some plastic debris and glue gummy balls that got trapped in the metal grill. I'll try to power wash these out, but it wasn't the easiest project.
Good news is that I got the unifilter (green) at my local bike shop and even got them to spray it for me as I explained I was on a budget.

Questions:

1) Should I worry about these lil particles?
2) Looks like I'll have to put 2 layers of the unifilter, but that'll make it too thick. Is one layer enough?
3) Now that It's pre-oiled, how am I going to glue it in? Or is a wedge fit sufficient? What if I have to use 2 layers?
4) Should I go ahead an drill some holes in my airbox cover as some have mentioned?

1. YES definitely get all the particles out. You don't want those in your engine.
2. One layer is sufficient.
3. Wedge fit is ok. (I don't glue mine in.)
4. Check others for answer. I didn't. Seems a lot of people cover up the holes after drilling.

You should be very concerned for the loose particles. I would not suggest a power wash ... some folks have had problems starting after power washing. Use a vacuum cleaner and fine cloth.

Oh, I didn't mean power wash while it was on the scoot - my bad. But I'll be sure to clean the grill as thoroughly as I can.
What about using some sort of Goop remover to remove these gummy glue balls? Would that affect the plastic?
