| Hi,
I did a Pictorial on replacing the air filter for the Silver Wing. I replaced my stock filter with the K&N but this can be used for just performing maintenance too. If you have any questions or comments please respond to this post.
This is also an easy procedure if you follow the step-by-step instructions. It can save you a lot of money to do it yourself.

| Hi Jeff, Great pictorial on the air filter change out. Just wished Honda would have made the air filter a little more easy to get at. DennisB :D |

| Dennis,
Thanks for the compliment and I agree that Honda should have made this easier to get too. It seems you have to remove about 10 screws to get the cover off but only 1 to remove the air filter. Also, it is too bad that the bike companies just can't design this like the vent filter in dryers in your home. You just pull it out and clean it and then replace it. |

| Jeff, I just replaced my air filter with the K&N using your pictorial. The one thing I discovered is that my replacement K&N is slightly different from the original filter. The recessed screw ( The right one on your step 10 picture) isn't used. The original filter had a plastic form(?) to screw into. The replacement does not have anything there. The other screws are certainly sufficient to hold the case, only there is a blank hole with no screw now. Curious if you or others have found this when you changed yours. Did I by any chance get the wrong filter? Gary
BTW Took about 30 Minutes for complete job and I had the Passenger Arm Rests on the back. I used a power screw driver. I want you to know that your Pictorial made the quick job possible. Great help. |

| Thank you for the pictorial, this site has proven to be disappointing as most the topics I have been receiving info have nothing to do w/Swing. I appreciate you sharing a valuable post. I have been looking into how to replace my air filter since it is not a simple screw or bracket. Thank you for your contribution. |

| Grogers, I'm sorry you think that this site is disappointing but it seems most people have found it helpful and enjoyable. Not all posts can be "just about the SWing" since we all enjoy other things too. We talk about rides, equipment, gear, etc so I hope you continue to participate and that you come to enjoy this site too. If you go to other sites you will find that not all things are related to their bikes either. |

| Most forums aren't intended to be text books or service manuals but are also conversations among people who have a common interest. The normal thing is to ask and answer questions but also to expect some digression. Think of it as a bunch of friends getting together at a local gathering spot to discuss their common enthusiasms, there's no reason to become testy or disappointed because something gets lost once in awhile. Expecting answers to one's problems by lurking and not participating in these roundtables will usually lead to dissatisfaction so join in and ask about things that concern your issues. |

| The first maxiscooter forum I joined (and still belong to after 6 years) was set up by a rider who wanted to find other people to ride with - he envisaged a virtual 'clubhouse' in which to chat, organize rideouts and exchange useful information. Inevitably, there are disagreements from time to time, sometimes quite heated, but that's life. I have to say that this forum is very similar - equally friendly and relaxed and I feel very comfortable here. No doubt the technical section will grow and grow, a benefit to us all, but I hope the social side maintains top position. |

| I read grogers post here and was tempted to say something then but I bit my tongue and counted to 11,376,158. I am guilty of posting a lot of non technical stuff and I guess I owe the group an apology. Sorry group.
I for one enjoy the friendly almost family atmosphere of this forum. We have folks from all over the US and from countries all around the world. It is nice to hear from people that I don't start out with any prejudice of race, gender, age, religion or any other wall we build to separate us from each other. I have learned some cool things from "girls", "old men", "Texans", "Yankees", "Hillbillies","Gators", "Limies"(SP) (and I don't know yet what a Limie is). Here we are all Swingers. Some have other bikes ( or at least claim to, to avoid appearing less of a man), some, like me, have one scoot and are happy with the Silverwing. Friends are more than just tech mates. We are people that share a common experience with our desire to ride a two wheel (some times three wheels) machine through forests or over mountains or through a desert at sunset or on a sea side overlook and then try to tell others what that was like. I enjoy MY experiences, but I sure envy those of you that have other scenic country and countries to experience. I can say that you are my forum friends. Please keep sharing. As I will. |

| I have to second the thoughts of JeffR, Opalsboy, MikeO, and exavid. The technical side of this and other forums is of tremendous value. But it's just human nature to want to be able to comfortably converse with fellow SWingers about whatever other subjects that might be of interest at the same time. That's what makes these sites enjoyable, at least for me; and I'm sure, for most others.

The term Limey is applied to Brits because the British sailors ate limes and other citrous fruits to prevent them from getting Scurvy If Forums such as this stuck solely to technical chat it would die in a very short time IMO |

I put a Pictorial on there years ago and this guy named "agwing" puts a link of the Pictorial I did with a comment of "searched the original Swing forum from 2004" so the guy could figure out how to do it.
Agwing is someone that doesn't like this site, or the people here, but he recommends my Pictorials to the people there. Kind of strange. |

| JeffR, I (actually, we) just added air filter replacement to the growing list of maintenance procedures, along with oil/filter changes and final drive oil, for the Silver Wing. As noted on other pictorials, the air filter pictorial is spot on. My daughter (turning the socket and screwdriver) and I (reading the instructions and handling the larger removed parts) changed the air filter this evening.
At this point, the new air filter is a stock Honda item, but I might give the K&N a try next time around. Spending some time with my daughter, who wants to take the BRC early next year, was the best part of this project. We enjoyed the time spent working on the filter replacement together. Thank you for providing these pictorials; they are accurate and make the work much less mysterious for a novice Silver Wing maintainer. |

But I was wondering if either or both were available at any auto parts store like Pep Boys or Auto Zone, NAPA, etc. They'd most likely be cheaper and have it in stock as I hate waiting and on occasion I've noticed some of them having motorcycle stuff. |

| Thanks JeffR,
I have found some of the other pictorials and as Gary points out ... they are awesome. When I first got the bike I wanted to remove the windshield for winter storage considerations and with your pictorial, it was a snap to do. I recall struggling a bit and re-read your notes and saw what I was doing in-correctly in no time. As you point out ... we must not force the plastic tabs or we will be sorry !! It will all come apart without forcing things ... just need the right direction of pull - which you point out. The simplest of instructions is what makes your pictorials "awesome". You leave nothing unclear.
I was looking for a fuel filter replacement pictorial but came to learn the filter is in the gas tank and not in need of replacement. Do I understand correctly? What about water of condensation in the gas? Wouldn't this (or even dirty gas) give cause to replace the filter?
Thanks again, Mike |

Yes, those conditions might give cause to replace the filter, but timely use of fresh fuel and Seafoam, or Techron, and possibly 'Dry Gas' may well preclude the need for a fuel filter replacement. But I think, though, that you folks in the Great White North would choose to winterize your scoot by either having the fuel tank completely drained or by having the tank topped off to edge along with a few ounces of 'fuel stabilizer' to prevent condensation. At any rate the chances of you having fuel filter problems are pretty slim. Tim |

If I may add my tidbit to Tim's words of wisdom, we in the Great White North run the tank almost empty towards the end of the riding season and make sure the last couple of fill-ups are premium gasoline only. Our premium contains no ethanol. Then add stabilizer on the last run of the season and leave the tank as close to full as possible over the winter. No worries in the Spring about fuel separation, varnishing, or water in the fuel. |

That is another great pictorial. I know you take the photos with a digital camera but how do you get the lines and wording put into the photo? Do you have Photoshop or some other program that you use. I know just enough on a computer to be dangerous but not enough to do a great job like you do.
On a side note: My 08 Wing must be limbering up a bit. My mileage went from 47mpg to 49mpg with this last fill up. Life is good in Princeton, MN. |

| Tim & Big Bird, Thanks for your comments on the fuel filter and keeping the fuel "good". Yes, the great white north was cold this winter, even in the east. I topped up the tank and added fuel stabilizer and ran it a bit before locking the S'Wing away for the winter. I probably should have gone with premium gas but didn't this time. I'll remember that for the fall. I was amazed how easily it started when taken out of storage. I had expected a stall or sputter or two but none were had. I'll look into getting some gas treatments like Seafoam. Thanks again, Mike |

I was getting concerned that I had no idea of where the bike had been before last fall, when I bought it. And was a bit concerned running the bike before I checked the filter. It looked almost as yours in the pictorial ... maybe a little dirtier. I cleaned it and put it all back together; but will find a new one soon.

Lots of excellent & helpful SW maintenance YouTube videos put out by SWCI & Stefano Bonacasa.

| As you point out ... we must not force the plastic tabs or we will be sorry !! It will all come apart without forcing things ... just need the right direction of pull - which you point out. The simplest of instructions is what makes your pictorials "awesome". You leave nothing unclear.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The Goldwings are pin and tab, EZ ro break, this Swing at least uses screws somewhere as part of securement and I like that I'll be using a little " lube " to ease panel work knowing they are more secure. |

| an invaluable help to changing out the aircleaner filter. I just bought mine with 5900 miles and I do not think any major maintance had been done to it >>it is an 2005 model. The airfilter was very dirty and installed a K&N filter..starts up and idles better..One thing I did on the grommets on the side panel is rub with lithum grease and the panel slides right in.>>Thanks for the info. |
