First topic message reminder :

Hi,

I did a Pictorial on replacing the air filter for the Silver Wing. I replaced my stock filter with the K&N but this can be used for just performing maintenance too. If you have any questions or comments please respond to this post.

This is also an easy procedure if you follow the step-by-step instructions. It can save you a lot of money to do it yourself.

My first post - Maroon / red 2003 ABS - Bought the K&N Engine Air Filter: High Performance, Premium, Powersport Air Filter: Fits 2001-2017 HONDA (FJS600 Silver Wing, FSC600 Silver Wing) HA-6002 , in black but returned it.  Photos attached show it’s missing an upper center left screw post.  Didn’t appear to seat properly when screwed in.  Bought the OEM at Walmart for $17.99.  TIP  One note that can help remove the painted panel to access air filter housing.  In Trunk rear right side has a pop out panel that once removed, you can get your hand inside to gently push the panel away from the rubber post. Sure it was posted somewhere in this forum but it sure helped me get that delicate panel off without that horrible sound of snap crackle pop.Air Filter Pictorial - Page 2 1bbd4310

Yeah, the K&N filter doesn’t seat properly and it is missing that post as well as not needing one of the dozen or so screws to hold the filter in. No worries.

Regarding your panel concerns; why not grease the tip of that mount post or rubber grommet? It’ll make it much less concerning to remove the panel next time. Same thing on the left panel. My 2¢

I, too had problems with K & N filters not fitting scooter just right----Burgman 400---SilverWings ridden to about or near 50,000 miles, never went thru the bother of changing them, was going to trade them anyway I find pavement ridden scooters have good filter life of at least 30,000 miles----even more for trailer bikers!

Had 2 Honda CB750 Nighthawk's----each traded at 50,000 mile mark---put K & N filters in them at beginning (they fit) and I left them alone for life of bike, including Alaska trips. No trouble

Just a few years ago the 'drilled airbox and K & N filter' mod seemed to a be very popular topic on maxi forums, or to add to your Signature with all your other bits. I never could see the point of the extra expense and drilling unnecessary holes personally. Although I do remember all sorts of outlandish claims about extra performance from it's devotees. I was never a fan of K&N after using one and seeing all the junk it didn't filter left behind in airbox.
That's a dirty filter for 11K.  Mine never look like that at but never let it go that long 8K or less. Dirt wears out internal engine parts very quickly.

That's what I found on my recently purchased used bike, IAC the inside of my airbox was spotless, so that filter was doing is job, I wonder if PO had many pets, or ....

"The K&N air filter debate" is kinda like a "oil debate" no end in sight, no winners, just opinions  Neutral

I like the oiled foam filters in my smaller scooters, just no good for Fuel Inj., O2 sensors, emissions, etc...

Older type foam filters worked great some recommended engine oil but a good foam oil was super sticky and a better option. OE got away from that just sell you a new one and less trouble cleaning it letting it dry and reoil. Dirt biking days all foam type always had 2 filters 1 clean ready to install. Filter type really won't change much with Fuel Inj. on newer bikes with O2 sensors.

I agree with the above, some like K&N and some don't. I do! Have used them for YEARS with no problems, cars, trucks, motorcycles and scooters. I never find any residue under them in the air box and they are easy to clean and replace in the bike.

It's kind of like why many will NOT use Fram oil filters, they quote a test done by an individual on the internet done in 1996. DOH.

I have used Fram oil filters many times as well with no failures (other brands yes).

Moral to the story is use what YOU like!

Wow, thanks for all your input. Nothing personal with K&N but was expecting it to seal / seat properly at 45 bucks. I ended up with the hiflofiltro but Frustrated having my “twist and shout” unassembled waiting for the Amazon delivery truck. By Monday I’ll be up and running on the city streets of Naples, Florida. Cheers!
