PostSubject: V Belt Light   belt squeak - V Belt Light I_icon_minitimeWed Apr 12, 2023 9:44 pm

Well, my V Belt light came on yesterday, 4-11-23, so I'll be replacing it very soon. I'm only going to ride it in my small town until my belt gets here and I replace it then I can burn up the highways once again. I've only had her out a few times so far this season anyway with the snow melting and sloppy roads.

Thank you for the heads up on the electro coundown.  My light came on at 14,500 miles while on a trip, rode 400 miles home with the light on and worried all of the time.

Went looking for a replacement belt. $200, a bit high.  Only have less than 5,000 miles on this one.
Will cancel the light for my next ride and see if comes on again.

PostSubject: Re: V Belt Light   belt squeak - V Belt Light I_icon_minitimeFri Sep 06, 2024 3:46 pm

I had my V light come on while cruising on a motorway. I was using Dr Pulley 26g sliders and somehow the engine rpm was over running. After a jiggle around with the throttle the rpm settled down but the V light remained on. I had to reset it but it could now be cout of sync with countdown belt reminder.

I've gone back to 28g rollers.

I know the V Belt light lights up based on mileage and can be manually reset, but do you really need to reset it?

Asking as I had my V-light come on at 145,000km. Rode it for another 3500km before bringing in to the workshop to have the belt and rollers replaced. Once replaced, the V-light went away on its own before need to manually reset it.

When I had 25gm sliders the v-light was for ever coming on, so resetting it became a regular occurrence. I ended up doing a fair bit of investigation to understand what was happening, it's all here somewhere in the search engine.
The v-light comes on under two circumstances.
1. The ECU counts down 16k miles from the last reset.
2. The ECU detects any disparity between wheel speed and engine revs beyond an expected range - such as caused by a slipping belt or accelerating hard with lightweight weights.
Everytime you reset it that also resets the 16k countdown, so I now have to rely on my service records to know when the belt change is due.

I feel a foot note needs to be added to this post.

Firstly, steve_h80 is correct with the 2 reasons why the V belt light would come on. it's just a warning light and will not affect the running of the Swing.

My foot note concerns the use of light weight Sliders (lightened rollers are a waste of time).
Because of the age of Silverwings now (lets be honest, they are the elephant in the room @ 250kgs with 50Hp).
Anyone changing a belt these days must consider replacing the clutch contra spring at the same time, and certainly change it before using lighter Sliders. Even a new OEM would be better than existing due to age of components. That said.
My advise would be to change the OEM spring for a Malossi 17kg white spring before even trying lighter sliders (it's also cheaper than OEM) to see the difference the spring makes to performance.
If you then feel you want to improve over that,...
I personally use 24gms sliders and a Malossi Fly clutch (which comes with a new bell for the clutch).
which cut out the slipping of the belt or bringing the V light on under hard acceleration in all but extreme circumstances like gunning it up hill on a Highway/motorway up ramp.
Malossi are the people when it comes to modifying Silverwings these days, their website is well worth the read.
If your going to do a job, don't just do half of it and wonder why things still slip and slide!

Hope this helps.

Be safe, be seen!

"If your going to do a job, don't just do half of it and wonder why things still slip and slide!"

Exactly, I've always believed that from that replacing the torque/contra spring is a must when looking to restore or improve CVT performance, especially when using DRP sliders. IMO the OEM spring is really just adequate for the task on a stock scooter (SW600), especially when you start adding weight (accessories and passengers, etc.) or your landscape is not flat! The Malossi white spring was my only mod for 3 years, it worked great overall, virtually eliminated "Belt Slap", with no significant reduction on MPG.
On a whim I decided to install 26gr DRP sliders about a year ago, a definite improvement overall, shifting is smoother, lower high-speed rpms, with better fuel economy, etc. BTW, had my SW600 nearly 4yrs. and approx. 5k miles, at 15,358 now, never got a V-belt light with my mods, should see one soon at 16k??
