I've been banned from the other side!

Earlier today some posts went up questioning mirror placement.
I went to the other side, to a post I made, which had the information necessary to answer the question here. I did not link to the other side. I copied the information from my post to answer the question here.

I just tried to log on to the other site and I got the following message.
You have been banned. Reason: Conflict of Interest.

Anybody else on the bannedwagon?

Unbelievable! What the heck is going on with that site?

Well, I just tryed to get on the .org sight and I got a "FORBIDDEN".

Now you went and got me banned too !!! Well, I think there will be many of us getting banned. I many others on this site get banned maybe then I will tell you what he said about everyone on this site. It wasn't very nice though.

If you, me and Dennis stay off his site, as we are the primary contributors of new information, his site will stagnate. There are many others which are regular contributors there which will probably soon tire of rehashing the same information as well. IIRC correctly, I had about 1800 posts and you and Dennis had about 300 each. Its a shame this had to happen, but the reason it did is because he put politics before the common interest for which he started that board. Karma is a bitch.

I agree with both of you. Dan, you virtually made that site and contributed so much it is very hard to believe he would ban you. I know that Bill (honda-silver) has contributed much to that site, as have many others here. I really hope he doesn't ban anyone else on this site that goes over there.

I have been scratching my head ever since this stuff has been developing... now I am wondering if King John is demonstrating what happens when you fail to call your physician after a four hour erection. I always was curious ...

Pardon me, but I have to rant at this point....

He is demonstrating what happens when he forgets he climbed on the backs of others to get to his throne, and that his throne means he is king of what? If he's not taking advertising, than where is the money, or what is the value to continuing to run the site? He doesn't even own a silverwing anymore.

Before this site he was the only english language site for silverwings other than the yahoo group. But he had no more coherent information on his site than the yahoo group or any other maxiscooter site. There was nothing that made it stand out, except that it was in existence for a while and without any others.

Then I came along and asked him to start Parts & Accessories.
I combed through every post he had looking for information on aftermarket parts and accessories. Put it all in one place and made it a coherent resource. Then I combed thousands and thousands of posts on the yahoo group for more information. And then I built it up to what it was before he took me off mod.

And the main reason he took me off mod, was because I stood up to him about letting DennisB advertise his products, since he was a major contributor rather than just some guy trying to make a buck. I felt that the contributions made outside the products he sold should have bought him permission to advertise his own products. He should have been an exception to the rule. When John said no, I told him this was a better forum, because even though we have to deal with advertising, we are more concerned with making information available, than with politics of advertising.

That's when I was taken off mod. When he was more concerned about loyalty than sharing knowledge, that is when he jumped the shark.

Most people here are on even more than this forum and his. They are often on forums for maxi-scoots, and other bikes they have. In no forum have I ever seen any expectations of loyalty other than his.

The only reason to be the premiere forum in a given field is for prestige, which usually translates to $$. So if he is not taking advertising, what is the value of being #1 ?

If his site is that damned good without us, let him temporarily disable the
Parts & Accessories and Media Links Tutorials and How-tos sections of his board (both of which I started) for 30 days, and see what his traffic is like.

JeffR is by far one of the biggest contributors in the How-tos section, and Dennis' contributions, since he came relatively recently to the game are of the newest stuff.

Or he can delete all of our posts. Then his site would be a skeleton of its current self. He's got less than a dozen people left on his site that are regular contributors experienced with the Silverwing. And most of them are answering questions that have already been asked ad nauseum. Maybe 1-2 left will add anything new that doesn't come from here first. And even then it will get here soon enough.

Without our contributions and those of maybe only 6 more, he might as well turn off the site and pack it in.

I agree with you. I'm not sure why he doesn't want any advertising at all. I like the fact that Dennis makes high quality stuff and sells it here. I also like that others find things on other sites and makes us all aware of it. I pay a very small amount a month to keep the "ads" off so we don't have too see them all over the place. You know the ads for singles, advertising banners, etc. I just don't want to open up the main page and see those things.

But others here that visit that site, and are active there...you should not metion this site or even bring anything over here from that site. He will ban you if he thinks you are posting things here from his site. He is an IT guy and I wouldn't put it past him to save all of your IP addresses when you log in. I still think it has very good members and they seem very nice there too. Maybe one day he will change his ways since we do this just for enjoyment.

It did seem Dan that there were only about 10 or so members that were very active and knowlegable and he just kicked off 3 of us. I can't believe that he kicked you off though with all of the things you did there. For the longest time I thought you were the owner over there. You did a great job.

I was banned today, too (and he blocked my current IP address). I'm assuming he read my posts a couple days ago about circumventing his link block (since I never mentioned or even acknowledged the existence of this site over there).

I'd like to apologize and say I'm sorry to Jeff, Dan, Dennis, and any other members (especially the long-term ones) who got banned. I think I probably pushed him over the edge with my post, and I'm sorry you have to suffer for my poor decision. You all have a lot of experience and knowledge, and I really appreciate all that you share with us noobs.

The other site has a lot of great information, and, in spite of all this, I still intend to visit and keep up with what people have to say over there.

Don't feel sorry for any of us. I don't think it was any of our fault since we all visit other sites too. I think he is just a bit over the edge for some reason. I probably visit at least 4 or 5 other sites and I'm sure others do too. Sorry for you getting banned.

Just post on the other site how happy you are that forums like .org and silverwing600 exist, and I'm sure John will be happy to provide you a seat on the bannedwagon.

Dan, Jeff,Dennis,Bill,Ski, Dale, Kurt you guys are the core of this site. There is another dozen or so strong contributors to this site. We are like a family. Some artists. Some pilots. Some designers. Some teachers. All riders. We all add something to the stew we call a forum. It is not a FORUM when only one voice is heard. This group is important to sharing information about Silverwings and we throw in a novel or a humerous story every once in a while.
Please don't ban or forbid me for saying these things.

BTW Jeff for a 66 year old diabetic, That four hour stuff is all "Imagination".

I too have had problems with the UK forum. My sins concerned perceived advertising and my complaints were about:

• The high-handed way material was removed without any consultation or explanation;
  
• When I complained and the advertising policy was explained (by a moderator not the owner/editor) it simply does not make sense - I can tell others that I have had good value from a product or service as long as I don't mention its name; and
  
• The inconsistency in which the "ban" on advertising is applied, simply there are some folks who are allowed to mention brand names while other are not.
  

I am not a major contributor but I do like to post links to my various ride reports. My approach to that site is to simply ignore it and I have never posted there since the errors of my ways were so bluntly pointed out.

Impact on me? Nil; I have this fine site to contribute to.

Impact on him? One less contributor for his visitors to read and therefor one less reason for folks to visit.

I simply vote with my keyboard and don't visit or contribute.

One last point; life is too short to worry about petty bureaucrats like that. Your not going to change their attitude so move on.

One of the features of this club (and my other one) is the tolerance shown when what may be simple/obvious-to-some questions are asked.

To my knowledge there hasn't been a single put-down by other members in such matters
As Gary said, we are a mixed bunch with many talents and much, very diverse experience.

The answers I've receive to my questions are always reassuring, too.

It is such a pity when "it's obvious" is implicit in an answer since it may discourage other from asking 'simple' questions.

Ya gotta remember some of us can't see the obvious, as we don't know enough about the subject at hand in the first place. We all have a learning curve, with some it becomes a corner with a dead end. Then after we see the light we feel stupid cause it's so obvious we shouda seen it in the first place. I try not to ask too many stupid questions right off, I go back and read the older post try to find what I'm looking for then ask the stupid question to get the obvious answer. Question being why are Dan's post so sought after on the other forum if he's such a bad guy? Saw one of his post being referred to late yesterday evening.

If advertising is not allowed - any reference to a brand name (GIVI, J.Costa, Garmin, Magellan, Tom Tom, etc.) should be stripped, The mere mention of the name implies endorsement.

Kind of makes the complete parts and accessories section "personna-non-grata".

Isn't one of the reasons for these forums to help other Silver Wing owners learn about accessories, safety, performance modifications, and proper maintenance of our bikes? It seems odd to me that someone would want to limit the dissemination of information regarding the Silver Wing - regardless of which forum it was first posted on...

Dale that was the exact point I was trying to make to King John 18 months ago. The result then for me was he stripped all of my posts. I was just trying to promote Dennis because he had done so much for all of us on the forum. I don't guess I am banned or forbidden, but sure felt insulted that that guy could be so inconsiderate of ideas that were a little different from his. I was not being a wise ass about it at all. The posts just went silent into the hyperspace where all lost intelligence goes. I have not been back before yesterday just to see if I could. ( I can but won't). This site is so much more warm and friendly. And some of you other guys will have to advise me if there is someone on the .org site that does not post here. I know this site has the cream of the crop, the first team, the "A" team, the folks that will lead into places where man has never been before.

Hi to all, new to this site and my first post. I was also banned some time ago for daring to challenge his posts. Things went sour when he asked me to be a moderator and I declined the position. His attitude totally changed towards me then resulting in me getting banned! No sad loss as I see there are many great members on here from there. His site is the poorer for the loss of the many who built his site up to what it was. I have steered clear until now of forums and am hoping this site will restore my faith, after viewing it I'm sure it will.

We should start an official "I was Banned" List so we can keep track of all the good people no longer able to access the .org sight. Maybe print up some T-Shirts.

The T-Shirts could say....I WAS BANNED OFF THE SILVERWING.ORG SIGHT BECAUSE I BELIEVE IN FREEDOM AND HELPING OTHERS.

Actually, we can access the site, and can read most things there.
We just can't log in.

If you have saved the link to the forum directly that bypasses the main page, that is your problem. Just go directly to the www.silverwing.org main page and then enter the forum from the link there.

And certain sections are apparently invisible when you are not a member.
When I went over there but not logged in, the how-to section was invisible.
(At least I think it was invisible, there is no way for me to know for sure if its still there, but I doubt he is stupid enough to delete it)
Next thing you know, to increase membership he'll post a teaser of some sort saying how if you become a member you'll have access to that section.

I bet the next person to be banned will be bigbird.

I'm not sure that works. When I try your link I get the following error message:

"Error 403 or user barred from using this site."

As somebody said the other day, he is using both your membership id and your IP address to "ban" you from his website. I open my "History" file and found a URL that ought to take me directly to a post on that site and it also raises a 403 error message.

I think without hiding your IP address you are well and truely banned from the site; never to be allowed to darken its portals again .
