| Hey Guys, I put a brand new IRC tire on my scooter last week. It has less then 100 miles on it. I went out to the garage today and the tire was flat. After looking at it i found a screw in the middle of the tire in betwee the threads. Do i have to trash the tire or could it be patched? And if i can be patch what type of patch should i use? This is the first time i ever had a flat in my scooter in 44,000 miles.

| I'm no tire expert, but a screw right in the middle of the tire tread sounds like something that can be pretty easily patched, as it could be on a car tire. My understanding is that you don't want to try to patch side wall punctures. I would think that any tire store could patch it for you easily.
I assume no responsibility for anything I just said.

| Hi, I think if I was out on the road, I would go with a plug. If I found my tire flat in the garage, I would take the wheel off the scooter and have it patched from the inside. |

Will you be patching the tire or will you have a business patch the tire?? A lot of the motorcycle dealer shops say they cannot patch the tire due to insurance. If that is true, tell them you would be glad to sign a waiver, then watch their reaction. They make more money selling you a new tire, then patching the old tire. You could also call non-dealer motorcycle repair shops, they may be more likely. If you can dismount the tire yourself, then you might even be able to get a normal car tire store to patch the tire for you. - paul_scooter wrote:

If you can patch the tire from the inside the best type of patch would be a vulcanized rubber patch ... the same as a car tire. If you only patch the tire from the outside, I like this patch ( http://www.tirerepairkit.com/aboutus.htm ) ... here is an excerpt: We would drive into a service station, invite the operator to watch, then punch a hole in our tire, repair it, hopefully sell a big package of repairs, and drive on to the next prospect. (One time when we replaced a tire we counted 531 repairs in it.)531 repairs in the own tire, now that is confidence. Car tires with steel belted radials provide even more challenge. |

| I posted this on the .org site and I thought it may food for thought. For those that do not get to go to the other site.
I jest got back from a 200mi. ride. One of us had a small screw in his tire witch he removed and put in a fancy mushroom shape plug.It did not last long. Then he tried one the older kind.To make a long story short. He went threw 3 0f one kind and 4 of the other older kind.they seamed to last about 20 to 35 mi.. So I would only trust a plug to get to the nearest place to get it patched from the inside or a new tire.Roger |
