| Today while riding at Deals Gap, my right storage compartment kept popping open and I could not get it to stay shut. I took a quick "looksie" during a fuel stop. I am not sure if the upper latch is worn out or if the bottom portion is not grabbing and possibly sticking. It was driving me crazy in either case and I'm going to look at it a little closer tomorrow. Has anyone else had this issue on their Swing? My compartments are the older style factory paint matching doors... Not the gray ones on the later models. |

| Hi Ron, I think this has been a problem with the earlier Silverwings. A little creative and well thought out latch catch fileing would do the trick. |

| It could be that you are putting your scooter thru more stress or vibration than usual, and the dash is perhaps flexing more than it should causing the latch to pop. Something like this happens when a screw or tab didn't line up properly the last time you or a mechanic put it together. Or it could be the latch itself. The part that recieves the latch is adjustable in height. You could probably raise it a little. By the way, several people, myself included, have upgraded the old dash to the new one, which also results in a completely different and more effective type of latch on both compartments. If you want the details on how to do that I'm sure I know where to find them for you. Dan |

| Dan & Dennis, Thanks for the tips. I'm going to try and see if I can repair/adjust it. If it continues to be a problem, I would be open to seeing what needs to be done to upgrade it to the later style dash. I'll report back tomorrow on what I discover. Thanks! |

| I have the same problem with my 02. But then somedays it will work fine, then the next day won't latch right again...? Weather related maybe? Let me know what you get figured out. |

| I looked at the latch pretty carefully. It appears that the upper portion mounted on the door is worn out from all the cycles of open/close. It will hold by itself without being attached to the door but not well. There is a little spring that the door is mounted to and their is enough strength to it to pop it open. I went ahead and removed the piece and am going to head down to the Honda shop in Greeneville this PM and see how much a new piece will set me back. I think this will remedy it without much expense. I will keep you posted. |

| I have and 02 and I detest the old style latch on the right hand compartment.
What's the cost of upgrading to the new style and how difficult it is? |

What's the cost of upgrading to the new style and how difficult it is? Certain countries, such as GB and Japan, have had the textured dash for years. Until 2007 the USA had painted dashes, with the color based upon the model year.
The diagram below is highlighted with what you need to change to a textured dash.
When done, your Silverwing dash will look like the textured style dash. It should work for all model years that had painted dashes. You will have to research parts prices for yourself. Parts may be ordered from your dealer, or anyplace handling stock Honda Parts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

| Thanks guys for all the good advice. The new piece that screws into the top of the lid was just a few cents over 4 bucks. Not too bad and certainly won't break the bank. Should have it early next week. I will see if I can make any tweaks that might also improve it. If for some reason that this does not do the trick, I will take a look at a dash conversion as listed above. Janeway thanks for the compliment on the pics. The professional photographers that shoot at the gap do get great shots! I've tried to do this myself but without a good camera to take action shots, my friends have been unable to get a good photo so I went ahead and shelled out for the professional shots. I really love to ride the dragon. It is a great road for putting a bike through the paces, feeling rhythym and practicing your riding skills. I usually head down several times through the summer when I'm out of school. If anyone heads down their during the summer months, give me a call and I'm always up for a ride. |
