It is now legal to jailbreak and unlock your iphone.
This allows you to use applicatons obtained from sources other than the app store.
Here are the instructions for doing so.
1. Update your iphone software to 4.0.1 from your itunes.
2. Open your Safari browser on your iphone.
3. Go to www.Jailbreakme.com
4. Let it do its thing. It will install cydia as well.
5. Reboot your phone by holding the top button to turn it off, and confirm this with the slide as it shows on screen. Then hold the top button again for 3 seconds to turn it back on. Let it boot up.
6. Go to cydia, and follow the directions for user type, downloads and updates.
Ignore any error messages. many servers are slammed right now.
7. Reboot (step 5) after all cydia updates are completed.
8. Open the cydia app. On the bottom press "manage".
9. Choose "Sources"
10. Choose "Edit"
11. Choose "Add"
12 Choose http://cydia.hackulo.us
13. Choose appsync for your device.
14. Confirm it and let it install.
Once you have done this, you will be able to run any app from any source.
In addition, you can search out a program called ultrasnow, which will unlock
your phone, allowing it to be used with any carrier.
In the US that means a choice of AT&T or T-mobile.
Congrats. You now have complete control over your iphone/ipad.
