I've watched the videos posted on this site but could somebody please take the time to explain exactly how the cvt drive works? Its so much fun to accelerate from a stop and listen to the "real" bike you've just got the jump on rev out trying to reel you in!!!!!!

The SilverWing may be slightly different with its variator but the old Elite CH150D worked the same way as a gas golf cart with the drive and driven pulleys changing width as the revs change. The drive pulley sheaves(on the cart and old Elite) would move in closer together pushing the belt up (effectively making a bigger diameter) while the driven pulley sheaves open up (effectively making a smaller diameter) Like changing the size of the sprockets on a ten speed the smaller sprocket in front with a larger in the rear offers take off and moving to the larger front with smaller rear allows for more top end.

About the only difference in the SW's CVT system compared to the older snowmobiles is the SW has a separate centrifugal clutch. The older system used the drive pulley as a clutch, when the engine idled the drive pulley was at it's widest allowing the belt to slip allowing the engine to run with the snowmobile stopped. In the case of the SW there's a separate centrifugal clutch that disconnects the drive pulley from the engine. In the snowmobile the drive pulley turned all the time the engine was running but in the SW the drive pulley stops when the centrifugal clutch releases.
