Wheel wobble!

When I put my bike on the centre stand and move the wheel forwards & backwards there is a lot of slack. Is this normal?
Could it be worn cush drive? Does the Silverwing even have cush drive rubbers?

Tell us about yourself. What year Silverwing do you own? How many miles on it?

To try to answer your questions, how much is a "lot" of slack? It's really hard to diagnose a problem without any info.
To vaguely answer your questions, I would suggest yes, no, and no.

My apologies....
I'm the Hampshire, UK, I've got a 2001 SW with 16000 miles on it. I mostly use it for commuting 25 miles each way.
Previously, I've had BMW R1100RT, Blackbird, ZZR1100, etc.
I like the way it's such a simple bike - just jump on and go, weaving through rush hour traffic.
I've had to modify the screens. I found the standard one buffeted much too much so I cut about 3-4 inches off the top and now it doesn't buffet but doesn't offer enough protection about 60!
I've also got a Givi which I found was too tall for me to see the lit part of the road when raining and dark so I cut a couple of inches off that and it's perfect now.
I've fitted a RAM mount (love them) to the left brake fluid reservoir cover to hold my phone which I use for sat-nav (using Waze). I'll get the right attachment for a tomtom next month.
It's got a heated seat (useless) and heated grips (essential!)
Some idiot polished the seat before I bought it and whatever I do, I still slide off.
I've got a B03 on the front and a Michelin on the rear which I'm not too happy about.
I lost the back end on a bend on Monday even though I wasn't going that fast and couldn't see anything on the road (I went back).
Investigating the 'slack' in the drive is part of trying to work out how the slip happened.
Broke my toe slamming my foot down to stay on :-(

I'd say it's about 1cm of travel where it's not 'engaged'. I wheeled the bike out videoed it for you:

That does seem a lot.

I'd pull the wheel off and inspect the shaft and wheel splines, these should be lightly greased. Threat the final drive to an oil change and inspect what comes out.

Excellent video, Paul. I wish everyone who had mechanical questions would post something like that. It takes all of the guesswork out of a diagnosis.

I checked the rear wheel free play on my '09 just as you did. You'll be happy to know mine sounds the same, with perhaps a little less free play. But I also have half the mileage that you do. I wouldn't worry about it.

Slack in drive line of SilverWing is normal--just made that way.

Now Swing Arm free play side to side not normal, if that comes up.

There's a reduction gear in the rear drive to the wheel. If there's any play in the reduction gears at all they'll be magnified by the mechanical advantage of the gears, i.e. the play will be magnified at the wheel end. My previous two SWs had similar play as the one in the video. I'd ignore it and ride it.

Thanks all. I may change my rear tyre so it is paired with the front and see if that prevents further 'slips' (or just slow down!)
