When I saw the news that a drive through tree in CA fell I was afraid it was the one I've ridden my Goldwing through a couple times. I was relieved to see it isn't the one near Leggett, CA but the Pioneer Cabin tree. Over three hundred feet tall that big Redwood must have made a noise even if no one was there to hear it. http://www.onenewspage.com/video/20170109/6488922/Famed-Tunnel-Tree-Falls-in-California.htm

173 mph wind whips Squaw Valley peak.. This makes me sad. I loved those old trees...They truly are a marvel to see. If you get a chance to do some research on how much ground water these big trees pump to the top branches every day. It's jaw dropping. That area was where they shot the back ground footage for the final Star Wars movie...The forested moon of Endor.

I have seen the Sequoias. I saw the General Sherman and General Grant. Grant is the largest living thing in the world! The diameter is 55 feet. These trees are rare. To think, ALL of them were nearly lawn chairs and patio furniture. Loggers were in the area cutting down other big trees when the legislation was passed to create the park. Some things need protection. It is sad to lose any of these beautiful giants.

The sequoias and redwoods are related, redwoods grow taller about 300' max. but are thinner trunked. They live about 2000 years while the sequoia grows to about 270' is thicker in the trunk and lives about 3000 years. They all are amazing trees to see and walk among.

http://www.onenewspage.com/video/20170109/6488922/Famed-Tunnel-Tree-Falls-in-California.htm I too have been thru the Drive-thru in Leggett on my Goldwing. Glad it was not that tree that fell also. If memory serves another drive-thru tree fell a few years ago (there were 3 altogether). Now looks like only one left... Those of you on the west coast if you haven't seen this better do it before it is too late:) I took my Nissan Frontier there this past summer on vacation but it was too tight so I had to "fake" a picture LOL |
