Slight oil leak Empty
PostSubject: Slight oil leak   Slight oil leak I_icon_minitimeSat Jul 14, 2018 4:30 pm

I recently found a slight oil leak on left side. Noticed a drop after backing out of garage and putting on center stand.
The bottom of water  pump is wet bolt where coolant is drained and some on lower skirt.  Cleaned it up last weekend and put 300 miles on and its just a drop hanging there on bolt head again. Filter and oil cooler are dry, just in WP area.

WP has a O ring behind it.   Anybody have a similar problem??  Its not coolant.

My experience is that the leak is coming from the two wires coming out of the right side casing near to the oil fill cap. The rubber seal get old with age and starts leaking oil.

Wires from stator are on the right side this is on left side. Oil would have to run under engine and up to get on water pump. Its dry on bottom of cases not coming from there. I can see bottom of valve cover and that's dry also. There is also a cam sensor in that location with an O ring. I'll take another look after storm passes here not a good day to ride anyway.

You could remove the seat and seat undercover to see if you can identify the source of the leak. If still unable to identify the source at that point you'd be well on your way to removing the tunnel cover which will expose the remainder of the engine.

Took a better look at stator and water pump this afternoon. Right cover is dry, dirt- oil line behind WP housing. My near and far sighted eyes it's hard to see but that's the leak. O ring ordered $ 3 bucks.

I'll repair at next oil change doesn't seem that difficult. Thanks for help.

Thanks! Be sure to let us know if the o-ring fixed it.

Finally pulled water pump today to replace O ring that's not the leak.
Its the WP oil is coming from small hole in housing. Housing has 2 holes in it. Weep hole same hole coolant would leak from. Slightest hint of coolant there too.

Can even put it back together WP seal is swelled won't fit back in groove. New pump on order $112
No need to drain oil only a small amount leaks when WP pulled.

Looks like FJR is going for a ride this weekend. Yamaha Reliability is not in doubt.

Back on the road again. Replaced WP on Wednesday a bit harder than I thought without splitting the WP housing. Top hose is short and difficult to get on while trying to slide pump into engine lining up drive and keeping O-ring from falling off.

A lot more coolant comes out also, more than just drain and fill. System was air bound and had to run it shut down refill repeat about 3 times without getting it hot.

125 miles today no leaks runs great.
