I'm sad to report that my husband and son were in a bad motorcycle accident on Monday. My husband has 4 stitches on his forehead, 2 fractured bones in his foot and a dislocated toe. They tried to re-locate his toe twice but it wouldn't stay in. He's got surgery first thing in the morning to get that fixed for good.
My son didn't do as well. He broke his leg in 2 places and his arm. Luckily, they were able to put Humpty Dumpty back together again and he will be going home tomorrow.
A car just pulled out in front of him. There was no time to react much. What happened after that is a mystery for now. We haven't gotten a copy of the police report and since they don't really remember what happened after that....
I promised him that I would sell my scooter. So no more scootering for us.

Sad to hear, but glad that injuries weren't any worse. I'm sure your son will have everyone signing casts and telling them tales about how he survived the crash. The decision to sell the scooter is very personal and I hope everything works out well.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Also sorry to hear about you getting rid of your scooter, there are many things in life that have risk. If you eliminate all of them there's not much life left.

Always sad to hear of accidents to fellow riders.

I do hope your husband and son have a swift recovery.

A very good friend of mine had a accident several years ago, tourist did a U-turn in front of him whilst rider was at speed. To this day he has no recollection of the accident and his only information was from witness reports.

Again, I wish you all the best in all you do.

Thanks everyone. I would love to keep riding, so would my husband, but my son is terrified. It doesn't help that a lot of visitors (my ex's family, especially) keep planting the "motorcycles are evil" seed in his ear. I want to tell the world, hey, Drivers are evil! If people would slow down and pay attention, it wouldn't be so dangerous for bike riders. My son wasn't injured because he was on a motorcycle, he was injured because he was knocked off a motorcycle!

Sorry to vent, I've gotten past the "scared momma-bear" stage and now I'm just pissed!

I read a great response to the motorcyles are dangerous discussion - may have been on this site I do not recall. I just thought it was an appropriate response.

If someone tells you how dangerous motorcycles are, just ask what they drive. When they answer tell them: "I think that the 'thier car' is the most dangerous thing ever - I had a friend that was killed in an accident and was driving one of those."

Risk - find "your" (not their) acceptable level and roll with it.

I am deeply saddened about hearing about the accident.

Do not rush to sell the SWing though ... take your time. Maybe other options may present themselves.

Ashley,
I'm sorry your son and husband were injured, may they recover swiftly and totally.
I will add them to my prayer list.
I hope you can continue to ride.
Take care and be safe.

I'm so sorry and thankful that they will heal. The emotional scars are the tough ones sometimes.
My dad, almost 90, is not happy I have had bikes these last 20 years. I tell him there is risk in everything we do. I wear my gear, have taken safety classes but I know things still happen out of our control. There is danger in riding a bicycle, climbing a ladder, driving a car. My neighbor had a big bike and his brother was killed last year on a motorcycle and he sold his bike.
I saw a church sign a few months ago that said, "If you live a risky life you may not live long, but if you don't risk at all you are not really living" I think there is some truth to that. You could stay home and then fall in your home. I think the key is to be prepared, think clearly, pray and live your life.
Best to you all during this tough time....

Thank you all!
Just an FYI, the police report does say that it was the car driver's fault. My husband is 'off the hook'.
Both boys are recovering quite nicely. My husband has been reading all the great things y'all have been writing and it's better than a get-well quick card!

I am sure that take a load of your husband's mind.

That is great news.

Did your husband have the surgery??

I am glad your husband is enjoying this forum ... it is like a big family (even if you do not ride or own a SWing).

yes, he is "doing too much" and hobbling around with (or mostly without) a cane. He actually broke his toe (which is why they couldn't get it back in place! ouch!) and has a little pin sticking out the end. It reminds me of the toothpick with the curlies they put on club sandwiches to keep everything together!

I have never heard of surgical pin sticking out. I wonder if it was intentional ... or what the purpose of a pin sticking out?

I am glad that they came out of it reasonably well, considering how bad things could have been.

Hopefully you guys won't give up on biking yet. Give it some time to see how you feel. Maybe the accident will be a warning sign that makes you a better rider rather than a non-rider.

We can't erase all risk from life. Even if we did, life probably would not be much fun.

Since the other driver is at fault, join our litigious society and sue the bastards! Smile Get a few bucks out of them and use it to hedge the risk of riding and buy some disability and life insurance. Not trying to be grim, just a realist.

Hoping for the best for you.

We will see how things go before we start suing. I'm sure this is an "accident attorney" wet dream. Luckily, we are insured pretty well, but I don't know when I'll be back at work :-(. And I'm one of the few people who love their jobs and can't wait to get things back to normal....

Should I go ahead and "call for a free consultation"?

Peach,

I just saw this post and am sorry to hear of the accident. I hope they all heal quickly and they get back to 100%. I would at least call for a free consultation since there may be things you need to document now. If you wait too long you may forget a detail or two. I haven't had any legal training but when watching "Judge Judy", it seems so many miss minor details that would really help out later. Good luck to all and I'm sure we all fully understand why you would decide to not ride for now, or ever.

It may help to understand

1) everything you should do
- What expenses could be covered (more than you might think

2) everything you should not do
- Do not sign anything unless you know what you are signing
- Insurance company will try to get you sign earlier

3) everything you may should or need to document

As my name implies, I'm Mr. Peach aka Peach's husband and I'd like to say thanks for all the well wishes and sound advice. It's so nice to read such an outpouring of support. I've been reading since Peach pointed out the site to me and have enjoyed reading all the stuff about the SWing and all the help for getting her running again. There's nothing that makes me grin more than riding with my wife and we both hope to be doing that again as soon as my toe and foot heal up. I cannot wait to get either Bruiser fixed and up and running again, or take the cash for Bruiser and give some of it to Honda, or Mr. Davidson, or perhaps to Mr. Kawasaki or someone else. Anyways, thanks for all the kind words of encouragement.
