| hi all, Im sure this topic has been covered before, but Ive only noticed today, than on initial start off the silverwing transmission makes a howling noise (poss cluch), once over around 4-5mph, it goes away,I took off thr trans/cover,and cleaned the inside, (not too dirty), bike has done 8,000 miles, any advice would be most aprec iated, cheers mark. Sorry everyone, just found the cure in "search", will try the rev with the break on tommorrow, cheers, mark.

| Ah, the Strangled Sealion noise!
Mine does it when I've been crawling in traffic or the weather's very hot.
I live with it (my X9 did it, too) but others have solutions. |

| Don't baby the take-offs. It seems that the folks who have the most problems with the howling noise drive too gently. If you take off hard, it does the same thing as holding the brake and revving the throttle with every take off, and minimizes howling in the future.

| A light sanding of the driven clutch pads to de glaze helps a lot ,and you can re grease the bearing inside the bell that some found the bearing was dried. |

There is no bearing "inside the [clutch] bell". What Tinman is referring to would be the needle bearing inside the driven pulley assembly. Or, possibly, the outer support bearing in the belt case. But then that is a sealed bearing. HTH Tim |

| Thanks Tinman and Cosmic_Jumper for the tips. I shall look at the clutch plates when I get that far in stripping her down. For now though, I have been a bit harder on the acceleration from start and the noise seems to have disappeared. A little more fuel, but a lot more fun! Mick |

| Just hold the brake and rev it up to about 4,000 rpms for maybe 4-5 seconds and it will go away. |

| Howling is not really the right discription, in my case it's more of a rustling/screeching noise. |
